New Star Trek series - 2017

It won't work. :(

I really don't think the mass market can handle traditional Trek anymore. So they'll try and make it less like old skool Trek, so the Trekkies won't watch it, but neither will any one else.

Nightmare scenario for me will be season long story arcs featuring "yoofs in space". And if it's anything like DS9 or the rebooted guff, I'll scream.

Not expecting much, but at least it will be better than no space sci-fi at all.

I sincerely hope it's not following the style/theme of the recent films.

Well, personally I hope they don't follow Abram's vision. After all, in the last film he showed us that you can beam from Earth to the Klingon homeworld so there's no more need for a fleet of ships and also that they now have a cure for death (Khan's blood). That kind of ended Star Trek for me. It's the root of my one great fear about SW7.

Of course, the nightmare scenario is that they use the new 'improved' transporters in the same way they did The Stones from Star Gate Universe. You know, so they could do critical stuff like go to prom, hug their lesbian wives, see their families and justify the cancellation of the entire series.

The problem here is if they step out too much it won't be Star Trek but if they stick to the formula it will be boring like the first 2 series of Enterprise.

I also seem to remember it was about a 5 minute journey from Chronos to Earth at Warp.

The massive plotholes in the rebooted Star Trek films are not the basis for a series, they were entertaining as long as you didn't think too hard about it.

Love it but may hate it....

The issue with so many trek tv shows and films is they covered everything and then anything else, so I am still curious what they can do in terms of creativity and direction and exactly what universe and when it is set is another thing.

I did love the dark vibe of the mysterious section 31 in the tv shows and latest trek reboot film but I hope they can introduce even time travel and the best bits from all the films and shows into the new series.

I so want this to be good, but I fear it will be rubbish. It's got a good chance to be good though – fresh cast, fresh production team, potentially (and most likely) a fresh alternative universe to spread out in.

But if it doesn't hit the ground running then it will fail, whether or not it improves later on (see Enterprise).

I agree with everyone that an academy/cadet based series would be a terrible mistake.

The reason why Trek Fatigue set in at all was because it was the same people at the helm for TNG/Voyager/DS9/Enterprise. Many of the script ideas were familiar because they'd been reused from other Trek series. This became the look and feel of Trek, and we'd seen it all before. The danger is that they've painted themselves into a corner, and doing anything original or different will be seen as "not Trek" and sticking to the well known formula will be seen as just a boring rehash of all that came before.

JJ Abrams actually performed a minor miracle by keeping the old flavour of Trek, but somehow making it new, shiny and accessible, with classic characters that we connected with.

The new showrunner has worked with Abrams on scripts before, so there's some hope there, and a series does give an opportunity to do more with character and story development as long as they can move away from the usual trek "and everything's okay for the next episode" lack of consequences.

Yeah, the Rick Berman era certainly has a certain feel to it.

I hope they can distill some of the reboot into the new series, although it will have to have far fewer plot holes to make a credible series.

I can see it being a Game of Thrones style big budget, 6-episodes-per-series affair. I'm not sure if a traditional 26 episode series if viable while maintaining the aesthetic and quality of action sequences etc. we're becoming accustomed to.
