New summer transfer thread

Wasn't Niall Quinn having a go at the likes of West Ham for paying over the odds for players. And Sunderland then go and ***** £19.5m on Richardson, Chopra and Gordon

with nearly half of that going on a decent keeper who will probably stay till the end of his career, which is quite a while off.
Have you watched any sunderland pre-seasons? as much as i hate richardson, it looks like keane will get the best out of him, hes getting stuck in and seems to have lost the 'im a man utd player' attitude

In all fairness though, 'marshalling' a team who played like a conference side isnt exactely an achievement.
IIRC, he didnt do all that well in the 1st leg against the players you mentioned.
We made them play like a conference side though, after all, they had no problem going back to SerieA and beating Inter Milan (their one defeat all season in the same week).

I cant see Fletcher going just yet until some of the youngsters are fully tested in the Premiership. OShea was pretty good in some of the preseason games in midfield, but not sure how well he would cope against EPL teams.?
O'Shea did superb in midfield against EPL opposition last season. When Scholes got his ban(s) O'Shea came in and arguably did a better job in his absence by allowing Carrick freedom to roam. I don't think you have to worry about O'Shea.

Richardson has proven his worth to a struggling club in the past, although £5.5m is ridiculous. Gordon is pure potential, at a year younger Buffon was £33m, 3 times more and I'll tell you, there's not much between them at their ages.
Hopefully Gordon is able to deal with lots of shot practice though :p

Why is Yakubu so under-rated and being linekd for so little money.

If Bent is worth £16m hes a year younger but Yakubu has scored more premiership goals has he not ?

Take into account over-infalted england player prices surely yakubu is still worth £13/£14m ?

I'd say Yak is worth £12m at most. He does himself no favours by being lazy around the pitch (though apparently he has changed pre-season) and by shuttin up shop after February.

Buffon's move came when Italy had an even more over-inflated market then we have now. The likes of Lazio were spending £28m on Mendieta. Buffon wouldn't move for anywhere near that in today's market in Italy, probably more like £10m.

I'm not denying that Gordon is a good keeper, he is definitely the Mackems best signing so far. But these no way he's worth £9m at the moment. £5m tops. But I suppose due to all this foreign investment fees are getting driven up in England to stupid levels again. And it's not going to help matters if other teams simply follow suit which unfortunately is happening.

He caught Malaria a few years back which has been effecting him for a while but when hes fit hes one of the ebst strikers in the league without a doubt

Richardson is a great signing for a club gearing up for a relegation fight.

I mean that in a positive way.
I have to say he is a good player for a lower end club, but wouldn't hack it at Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd and a few others.

Good luck to him, atleast he gets what he wants - First team football.

exactly. his attitude and play for west brom was fantastic that one season, not top 6 quality but make him really work for a living and he's a good player.

Yep.

He'd do well at these clubs:

Fulham, Derby, Sunderland, Wigan, Reading etc.

Whilst the comment regarding Italian investment is true, 2001 was a mental year, I believe the current £9m tag on Gordon is about spot on. I can't think of a better British keeper, with Foster and Carson possibly as 2nd and 3rd. If you know you have the best British keeper you know you have the right to charge high prices.

If players like Bent, Richardson, Bianchi etc.. are priced as they are then £9m is a spot on estimation of his price IMO. I'm just angry we didn't buy him.

Samaras to Boro being linekd again with several sites now covering it, something in this maybe ?

That's the point thou, none of those players are worth what they went for. Bent £8-10m, Richardson £3m and can't really comment on Bianchi since I simply haven't seen enough of him to value him. The current market is over-inflated and most players seem to be going for 80-100% more then they are worth. You only need to look at Mido having a bad season resulting in his value going up by £2.5m to see this.

It's a shame because it seemed like the market was returning to more sensible levels a few seasons ago after the stupid fees getting branded about around 2001.

yep, i mean realistic transfer values this season would have been, voronin 0.002 million, babel 1 million, torres 1.5 million, smith 6 million, Nani 40mill, Anderson 40mill, hargreaves 50mill, Pole in Goal 15mill, tevez, well he'd be near enough the £100m man.

but as you say things have gone crazy.

;)

Dont flatter United there.
Roma played awful. They couldnt string a few passes together.
True, United played well, but playing well/looking good against a team that was playing far below their abilities always makes the winning team look like they did better than what they did.
Its like putting a Lambo next to an Astra. Looks impressive? Now put it next to a Ferrari. Less impressive now isnt it?
If Fletcher was good enough to keep Totti quiet like you say, wouldnt he have done better in the 1st leg? Or for that matter against Kaka?

I think you have your "Everything Serie A is good" Tinted glasses on. Flattery for Utd was justified. The tactics were absolutley spot on. Smith stopped the back four playing by closing them down. Totti didnt get the ball. It wasn't a case of Roma playing poorly. We never allowed them to play in the first place.

So everyone below Inter Milan in Serie A were crap then? That's what you must be saying if Roma are an 'Astra'. My point was, Man Utd made a top Italian side look rubbish.
Fletcher was one of the only players who played well in Rome too IIRC. I thought we also played well in the first leg against Milan where 3-2 flattered Milan. Can't defend the 3-0 in Milan though, Ferguson got the tactics wrong, he should have employed Smith to do to Milan what he did to Roma.
