New summer transfer thread

How about Mbulelo "Oldjohn" Mabizela, scored on his debut for Spurs from what I remember? ;)

I would argue that he's the second best I've ever seen come from Africa. First being Toure who for me ranks as one of the best CB's in the world.

If its the same Sami Kuffour then it is the defender who played for Bayern and Roma iirc. Played against Utd in the '99 Champions League cup final. Strong as a heard of rabid Oxes but not the most gifted footballer ever seen. Used to be pretty fast as well.
Was he the one that went nuts after the second goal and started punching the ground?

He was huge.

Thats him, somewhat nomadic in recent years after a move to Roma didn't work out too well.

As for the greatest African defenders, how about Marcel Desailly? after all, he was born in Ghana!

He hardly set the world alight playing centre back did he though.

Toure is probably the best African defender I've seen although I admit my knowledge of African football history beyond the last 15 years is fairly limited :p

May still do.

If he is on a free then it wont be a bad signing

They was another Kuffour in the lower leagues, but he was an Ex-Arsenal youth, both in England iirc, although he did get into the Ghana squad last year.

I don't think he was related to Sami

Here is my 2p's worth

I find it crazy that anyone in this country apart from Chelsea would buy someone for £7m+ and at least NOT try them in the 1st team initially (even if long term they may only be squad, especially with many managers not always sticking with one 1st XI) for a few games.

Sure of course there are the likes of Richards, Alves and a few other young defenders worth a lot more - at least potentially - but even Man Utd last three defenders we have bought, none have topped £8m as I recall and they have all stepped into the 1st team once they had a proper pre-season behind them. Admittedly Evra and Vidic had a mare of a time when they first came.

Midfielders and strikers are always going to command big money on average compared to defenders and I am glad that fergie is giving the likes of Jonny Evans and the other youngsters a chance to shine instead of buying someone in - there are so many on the fringes of the 1st team I really hope to see some new names becoming regulars in games.

It can't be argued :)

Toure might challenge once he's been around a few more years.

Nah, the best man-marker. Not the best defender.

Berbatov has never hidden his admiration for United and is rumoured to be unhappy with Tottenham and manager Martin Jol, which could speed his exit from London.

English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur has received a transfer bid for its Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United and will decide whether to accept it over the next days, the player's agent Emil Dantchev said on Friday.

Dantchev and Berbatov met with the Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy on Thursday, amid heightening speculating in English press that the Manchester club stepped up its interest for the Bulgarian striker.

Manchester United is in the middle of a striker crisis, with several key players out with injuries, and manager Alex Ferguson has identified the Bulgarian as his main target before the end of the international transfer window, which closes next week.

"Tottenham's board confirmed that Manchester United made an enquiry as to Berbatov's availability," Dantchev told Bulgarian sports website Gong.bg.
"We told them our position, they told us theirs. In the end, we agreed that the board would decide within the next few days and let us know."

"It's obviously a very appealing possibility, but Dimitar has a contract with Tottenham and he needs Spurs' approval to negotiate.

"I cannot comment the stuff in the English papers. The truth of it is that there is an inquiry, but everything else is speculation.

"It's clear though that Tottenham really want to keep Berbatov."
Berbatov cost Tottenham GBP 10,9 M when he moved from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. He claims he turned down a last-ditch attempt by Manchester United to scupper the deal because Tottenham showed more interest in signing him.

The Bulgarian became an instant fan favourite and ended the season as the club's top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions, including 12 in the league.
Rumours of Manchester United's interest refused to go away in the summer, but with Tottenham unwilling to let their striker go, it would take a bid in excess of GBP 20 M to prize him away from White Hart Lane.

I never knew that when Queiroz left us to go to Real Madrid, Ferguson offered Martin Jol assistant manager job at Old Trafford and that they are quite good friends.
