The old Top Gear thread was full of whingers about how the format had gone stale. It gets refreshed and there are more whingers before they have even seen it.

Yes, and twenty years later he gets pretty tiresome pretty quickly. Not sure how he's going to pull the others into "TFI My Motor" and make it entertaining.

I'm really hoping they can strike a better balance between bufoonery and factual content, without veering towards the William Woollard days of TG. CH is great at conveying exactly how a car drives and what it would be like to live with but I find he can be a bit dry on occasion, and whilst SM seems like a nice person, and clearly has plenty of driving talent, is the German sense of humour going to dampen things?

A while back Chris Evans mentioned that they will be putting some bike related stuff in which I'm really looking forward to.

Given his previous TV history I'd expect it to be more likely that it would be entertaining.

Old English? Never quite understood that, what slice of traditional english life exactly did we give up when they left our screens!

I like the idea of the new show, but it wont sell well to the masses, and its the kind of thing that will end up on channel 5 and then eventually die sadly.

Hopefully none! As none of them are even the slightest bit funny, Chris Harris is good and we'll hopefully get some decent reviews. But it will be pushed to BBC3 online or cancelled after the first season

Exactly. I liked the scripted comedy sketch show that was old Top Gear which has helped my decision to get Amazon Prime in the new year.

I think part of the problem for me will be that I really don't need an in depth breakdown of exactly how exotic super cars drive comparing the various merits of each one because I simply won't ever be in a position to buy one, like 99% of the viewers. I want to look at them, go "oooh... shiny", hear them make a load of noise and go sideways... then be used for some unlikely scenario that requires them to be driven through stunning scenery.

If it is going to be all in depth reviews and comparing cars for me it would have to get as exotic as a Seat Leon!

With this lineup I think it will have the best shot possible to becoming great, but it isn't going to be great overnight, which 2002 Top Gear wasn't either

I think we're forgetting, the early seasons of Top Gear were ok, and aimed at car enthusiasts, but there wasn't the type of relationship between the presenters that there was when it ended. It's only as its audience changed over the following 10 years that it's style also adapted and it become an overwhelming success. We should see new Top Gear not as Top Gear, but simply a new car based TV show.

The biggest challenge to new Top Gear will have is people comparing a brand new show, with new presenters and new ideas, to Clarksons Top Gear as it ended, with its 15 years of experience and audience. If people give it a chance, I have no doubt it'll grow in a similar way to Clarksons TG.

I thought the TG theme was Jessica by the Allman Brothers?

It was. I think steampunk has it confused with "The Chain" which was used by the BBC for the F1.

That's the album that supplied the bit used in the theme for F1, not Top Gear.
