New World MMO

its called trolling/griefing

Happens n many mmo

It does indeed, its a very odd mentality because its completely counter intuitive, instead of maintaining or growing a desire to pvp it does the exact opposite, it makes other players turn off from pvp and thus reduces opportunities for the original nutjob to get any pvp. Then again, lets face it, trollers and griefers have never been known for their ability to think intelligently :D

Back in the day before Ultima Online got the carebear land called Trammel people would band together and hunt trolls and PKs. I remember this fondly as my very first night online, trying to gather iron and then a PK kills me over and over. Being a 15 year old kid I got frustrated rather quickly. I went to town and cried out in frustration and within 10 minutes a hunting party had gathered of lords and ladies and the chase was on.. What an epic night. This sadly rarely happens if at all anymore even on fully enabled PvP servers... Could be an awesome thing to have in a game like New World. Imagen companies going on the hunt for red scum :)

Hello fellow UO player :) Where is Kainz when I need to remind him that game existed.

I was a thief usually, would hide out near brit bank in the inns and nick peoples stashes as they tried to trade items to alt characters using the inn chests etc :) I'd clear out the room and stealth as they logged out and back in. The wonderful days of dial up connections.

I've never really liked those kind of mechanics - makes it far too easy for a person who has been playing longer to endlessly grief a newer player without any real skill involvement and as a more experienced player just becomes tedious to deal with.

I've played EVE Online since the beginning, it's perfectly normal behaviour and great fun.

Eve mostly had a good balance in that respect - the only thing that sucked a bit was when people, usually new players, fell for certain scams or ganks there was no easy or even possible way to get revenge for them - some actions were far too one sided in terms of repercussion for the griefer.

Which often lead to some of my friends trying the game, being affected by those things despite me warning them, then straight up quitting when they realised there was no real way to fight back even if they were prepared to put the effort in to do so.

EDIT: I've lost count the number of times I've had acquaintances try the game, I've told them like 20 times never undock with PLEX in cargo, undocks with PLEX in cargo, gets ganked, quits game...

Imagine if to scoop PLEX you needed a POS setup somewhere and it automatically went into storage on the POS for 5 days or something :p I could have introduced some of my friends to the joys of POS bashing :s

Thats because, 24 years on, UO is still one of the best MMOs that ever existed, what a shame it is that MMOs went in the direction that they did. Though to be fair part of it was down to the userbase too, the gamers back in the late 90s were a different breed...I'm sure that I will get flamed for this but speaking generally people were simply nicer and more social back then in MMOs, the modern MMOer (again, generally speaking) is a good example of what happens to the standard of the average player (in terms of person, not skill) when things change from being niche to being mainstream.

The wonderful days of dial up connections.

SO true , I remember enormous 10-12 hour sessions on UO back in a time when it was 14.4 dialup and you had to pay on your phone bill per minute that you were online. Some of my monthly bills back then were huge, into the hundreds of pounds. Gamers today have no idea how lucky they are that they can get fast broadband for an entire month for the price of a pizza takeaway today.

as i'm playing more of this game i'm enjoying it more for what it is.

my concerns are that it's a huge time kill, for little reward, and there will be a point when you realise it's all for nothing but grinding to get better equipment so that you can grind quicker, but need more of the grind now for next item.

that happens, but at what point will that happen in this game? if i get 100 hours i'll be happy, but i'm not yet convinced i will. i'm finding myself just running forward and backwards getting ore from 2 different spots, and enjoying doing this, but for what? i don't really use it for anything other than seeing my levels going up.

i wish the beta was for a week longer to get some more time to decide

Its interesting what you say in the first sentence there, I actually did find that I enjoyed it more if I stopped thinking of it as an MMO. I found that when I thought of it as an MMO and thus made comparisons against all the MMOs I've played for the last 2 and a bit decades, thats when the disappointment set in, whereas I found that if I didnt think of it as an MMO I clicked with it more. Sadly though, regardless of how I thought of it, there simply isnt enough there currently to make me open my wallet for it properly at the end of next month. I will however keep an eye on it and maybe look at it more firmly again at the end of the year to see how its doing with 5-6 months under its belt.

luckily for me i've never really played mmos. i tried both SWTOR and LOTRO, but my experience of them is about 10 hours max of each and i was much much younger so didn't experience much other than the main quest in front of me

Yep, PVP in MMOs is just ends up being a griefing toxic mess of moans and groans. Thing is it's easy for Devs as createing a new +2 sword for PVP is easier than endgame raid content.

Still I don't want to get sucked into another mmo, it needs to wait till I retire just do not have the time :)

At this point they arent going to have "more variety in the quests" - this is it for launch and presumably the forseeable future.
