NHS=Negligent Health Service

Most of the work the NHS do is top rate and you pay a pittance for it in the grand scheme of things. The issue is that as a nation we are a complete **** show when it comes to our health, the NHS have massive staff shortages at the moment and more pressure for work than ever before.

Its all just piling up

Not enough staff
Not enough staff === more pressure and work for those that remain
More work than ever due to COVID making a mess of everything
More and more staff are leaving to locum back at the hospitals they worked at for probably near double pay because the NHS is so desperate
NHS is ******* money on locums because they beggers can't be choosers and its an employees market right now
Brexit has stifled our ability to recruit from abroad and lost lots of foreign staff when it happened.
People are taking early retirement or leaving the profession completely due to most of the above
Its a public sector business so its got an overrepresentation of ******* useless oiks that know their rights and that they can play the system like a fiddle to work on their own terms.
The pay for some jobs is nowhere near enough.

My partner currently has someone who has been off on stress leave for about 2 months because someone cut her off in a meeting because they didn't have time for everyone to have their say. Shes always had a chip on her shoulder and GPs seem to be happy to sign anyone off work with any illness, I assume out of fear of getting sued. My partner is waiting for her to reach the end of her "full pay" sick leave before she will be miraculously better for a while before no doubt pulling another one.

@fez Im currently dealing with similar sickness issues at work. I don't know what's going on but GPs seem to either buy any old crap these days or just cba to actually look in to an issue.

I hear you - married to band 8 manager in NHS - Some of the stuff she mentions about sickness/time off/stress requests is just ridiculous. Same people, same "sickness" issues, GP signing them off for nothing. I don't doubt there is proper sickness/absense amongst the staff but some of the crap is beyond a joke. Wouldn't last 2 minutes in private sector.

Someone currently off with "back pain issues" for last 2 months - All over facebook with pictures of her riding her horse every day.

Isn’t that blatant gross misconduct? Shouldn’t the HR / legal team be on that?

On Christmas Day there were only 4 porters in the hospital proper, 7 or 8 people didn't bother showing up. There was only 2 in A&E until 1800 too, so I had to spend the first 4 hours of my shift as cover in A&E which meant only 3 were left in the main hospital. Honestly, it was ******* insane. Just a good job that those of us who did turn in are grafters and not afraid of a bit of hard work.

That's ridiculous. I hate it when people don't pull their weight.

Not as bad as back in the mid 90s, my aunt's colleague (admin in a Sheffield hospital) was off sick with 'stress' for 6 months as Robbie Williams left Take That! Think the colleague was in her early 20s.

A few years back I had a member of staff off long term with stress on return the occy health report came back to me that the absence policy adds to the stress of said staff member and they recommend as a result that it be disregarded in this case.

That's just as bad as someone wanting a certain week off work but fully booked. Then ring in sick at the start of the week they wanted off.

Oh my partner has had this. Thats kind of the proof that people know the NHS is completely toothless. Plenty of staff will ask for a day off and when they don't get it they are magically ill on that day. Its not even like they are smart about it. Some will even say that they need it off because they have a holiday booked so its not even a debate as to whether they are ill or not. Problem is proving it.

One of our friends who is a doctor has barely worked for about 2 years because she was pregnant during COVID. Had some issues and got signed off from about a month into the pregnancy, never did any work after that, obviously accrued holiday the entire time she was off. Took full maternity and then did something similar for her second soon after. If you have zero morales its a rich feeding ground.

When you have **** all staff and you are overworked, the last thing you have time for is performance managing the chancers and the lazy.

It does catch up with some people as the NHS is fundamentally a small world once you are high enough if you want to work in the same geographic area. My partner does quite a bit of interviewing and off the books the senior management talk to each other. You make enough enemies and you won't get promotions unless you move further afield.

A GP is an advocate for the patient. It isn't the GP's role (or have the time) to investigate if they're exaggerating, or have any duty whatsoever to the patient's employer. If it's a blatent lie then they'll refuse.

I have a feeling @Dis86 you'd be whinging equally as much, "but that's the GP's job", if they didn't hand out fit notes when asked.

How do they know its a lie if they don't investigate? When you're a potential accomplice in what is fraud then you have a requirement for due diligence.

As an engineer I couldn't sign off a report saying something was x or y if I hadn't investigated that fact. I couldn't sign off another colleagues work if I hadn't read it and checked calculations or references.

"I'm too busy" wouldn't stand for anything.

Reason why there is a staff shortage in the NHS is because the sick pay is too generous 6 months on full pay is why there is so many staff on sick with "stress" put them all on statutory sick pay and you will solve the staffing problems overnight.
