Nikon D850

I love when a new major camera is announced :D

I don't really get it.

It's a great camera by all counts, if you are not in a position to get one of these, it matters not. If you are in a position to get one of these, whether you shoot Nikon D810 currently (great, perfect upgrade), Sony (does it matter? there is the A9 which looks like it does 95% of what the Nikon does), Canon (get the A9!).

Was quite tongue in cheek my comment. The mass hysteria where all of a sudden the camera you've been happy with for years suddenly becomes useless.

My consolation? is that the A9 or any Sony E-mount for the matter is perfectly usable with Canon lenses so it's not the end of the world.

Worry about the pictures, if Canon bodies is lacking, get a Sony, all the lenses will work just fine!

(mostly)
yea most lenses do work fine for portait and landscape. Anything where you need critical AF is not that great.

I waited until the specs for the D850 were released before I ordered my Canon, in all seriousness it does look like a good camera and I admit I would like the tilt screen but the Canon system works better for me and my main lens the EF35mm is exceptional and Nikon has nothing in there system to touch it. I also prefer the ergonomics of the Canon bodies...

Was about to say the same thing, obviously we all need a d850 to take a decent photo! Good photographers take good photo's modern cameras are that good that they are very unlikely to be the limiting factor! I first got into photography about ten years ago after reading here and TP my 5d mkii is light years ahead of the cameras everyone was using back then but my best shots still don't stand up to what some guys churned out with a 30D or D40x

I'm currently using a pair of D800s. Doing less paid work these days, so I've been looking forward to this announcement as a probable upgrade and dropping back to a single camera. £3500 pre order stings a bit though.

I like a D850 but what do I gain that I need from it?

Having use the 5DIV the past 6 months in various situations and weddings, it hasn't let me down.

Do I need 45mp? no…even Ross Harvey posted today's blog he will shoot in M-RAW (something that is new to Nikon apparently!) at 25mp.
Do I need 4k video? No.

I would however like:-

Tilt screen
True silent shooting
Faster card slots

Switching to Nikon I will lose

Built in wireless flash system,
Dual Pixel AF
The 85/1.2 and the awesome 35L mk2
GPS in photo (it's kinda nice!)
Good wifi control via app

It is better in the 5DIV in many ways such as FPS, pixel size, silent shooting, tilt screen, better card reader (albeit the 5DIV is faster than I thought, it is certainly faster than the MkIII), but deep down, I don't think the gap is that big?

It would be much cheaper to get a Sony A7Rii for landscape and use Canon glass than to switch entire system.

For what you do and have invested, it probably isn't worth jumping ship.... at this stage. However the D850 does beat the **** out the 5DIV :)

However, if Canon carry on the way they are with mediocre upgrades like the 5D IV and hold back features so not to tread on their other products, show no innovation but at the same time charge over the top prices for it then it's not going to be long before you have to question it. If I was a Canon shooter now I would have jumped to Sony probably so I could still use the lenses.

I think both Nikon and Canon have been stuck in their ways for a while but on this you can see that Nikon has thrown everything at it. Even the focus stacking which apparently was due to their engineers liking the super macro shots they'd seen and thought it would be cool to put in the camera, it's things like that we want to see and actually that is one thing I'm looking forward to trying out.

After the "extraordinary loss" earlier in the year which they would have known for a while they probably thought they better throw in the kitchen sink.

Why do we always have this sensationalist stuff when a camera is released? It hardly beats the **** out of it, yes it is better and has a better specs list but the end result isn't a step change from the competition. Nikon have clearly thrown everything into it to try and generate sales it will be interesting to see if it works but it hasn't previously allowed them to close the sales gap. If I was starting out today I would go Nikon but if you are happy shooting canon then there really is no reason to shift over Ray for example would shoot a better wedding on my old 30D than I would on a D850 just because he is a better tog!

Ignorance must be bliss for you my friend! I have a feeling you watch Ken Wheeler videos...

You'd never hear someone say don't upgrade your computer or car, it won't make you better at browsing the web or a better driver, yet every time there's a new camera we're reminded it won't make us better photographers. I'm not complaining it just seems an odd thing to point out every single time.

It mostly comes from jealousy.

I run my cars in to the ground, if it still takes you form A to B and repair costs aren't more than the costs associated with buying and running new car then there is really no point in upgrading. Occasionally I buy a new camera, the new camera enables me to take photos I could not have achieved before

People getting jealous of gear is weird, buy it if you want it....I like new cameras as much as the next guy but what I get jealous about is "how on earth did you take that photo......" and wishing that photo had my name on it.

Most people can't afford it that's why they post rubbish in these kinds of threads...

Great post I could afford a much better camera but have come to the realisation I'm not willing/able to put in the time to improve my skills enough for it to make a difference!
