*** Nintendo Switch ***

Are any of you still playing the re-released Super Mario 3D World? I've been playing it solidly for the last 6 weeks and I enjoy the replay value of finding all of the green stars. Worlds 1-6 are pretty steady going. The difficulty racks up a little in worlds 7 and 8, with the boss of the game being at the end of world 8, which I managed to defeat after a few attempts. Then there are 4 more worlds after the base game, and there are some tough nuts in there! Once you've completed some courses in the upper 4 worlds, then it goes make the previous 8 worlds a lot easier and so you can go back into those to grab some more green stars because you are now better at the game.

I haven't even touched Bowser's Fury yet!

Next up I think will be Mario Odyssey.

Bowsers Fury is much better than the base game and gives an insight into what they could do with Mario going forward.
I didn't like Super Mario 3d world much due to the perspective issues but completed it to get Rosalina. I couldn't be bothered with the rest of the special worlds, they just seemed difficult for the sake of it, rather than properly designed levels. (like jumping on a spinning platform, with fire quakes going off, all the while timing a jump onto a moving bar with fire enemies shooting you from both sides is not just not fun).

Odyssey is pretty good, again completed it to unlock special areas but no real motivation to get everything.

Looks like pre orders for the skyward sword joy-cons are starting to go up if anyone is interested. No idea if there are a limited number available but I can see them being popular at least as a collector's item.

I'm thinking of buying my 7yo daughter a Switch, the one that just released today. I'm slightly concerned that I'm buying older tech although I'm only basing that on the fact the Switch has been out for a while.

What say you who are much better clued up than me?

A new one is about to enter production as the chips for the current one are no longer being manufactured.

We don't know a lot about it, but if the rumors are true then it's a huge jump in power, 3-4x the performance.

7" OLED screen, DLSS, 4K support when docked (via DLSS). It will play all of the same games though.

The Switch itself is a brilliant console and would be fine for a 7yr old. Still no official word on if the new update actually exists.

Everything using the original Chip if the reports are to believed. Was widely reported beginning of March.

Now whether Nvidia are stopping producing the chip as Nintendo are aiming to switch to a newer more powerful unit(s - Super Switch Lite anyone?), or Nintendo decided to actually work on a faster unit because Nvidia decided to stop producing those chips...that's for you to decide. They are getting long in the tooth now though.

I am definitely up for a mid-gen pro console though, as the Switch, whilst brilliant, does struggle for horsepower at times, and a decent performance upgrade would really help ensure there is enough horsepower to enable games to keep coming to the system from 3rd parties and raise the bar for them and first party titles. (hell even Animal Crossing struggles in certain circumstances)

Yes, the games designed for the system are best, BUT as the Wii U showed clearly; good first party titles do not a system make; it needs to have a great range full stop, and if the machine is too weak; the larger first parties will stop trying to port games to the system, as it's simply not possible.

Whilst games were being designed with the Xbox One and PS4 in mind, the performance parity was large but not insurmountable with the right choices; but PS5/XBSX to Switch...that's a very different equation.

The people buying buying the Switch(there are a lot of them) haven't been doing so because it's powerful but because it's a great system with great games and a brilliant selling point. Play both on TV and handheld mode.

Many people have bought one as a second system to compliment their other hardware. It doesn't need to be all powerful.

first impressions of monster hunter rise are good :)

i tried the demo for about 2 mins earlier and im glad i did as i got loads of mega potions etc in the full game.

i can see the switch is struggling a little but im not waiting possibly a year for the pc version and im impressed with the way the game is running on the switch hardware, it is a lot more fluid than i thought it would be, from my knackered memory it is performing about the same as mh world did on the stock ps4 and is a graphic downgrade from that but a nice upgrade from generations ultimate that is also on the switch.

loving it so far, i am still getting to grips with the wire bugs and i love riding the doggo around, also no more having to find a monster and paint ball it and nice open areas with no loading ala world :)

People have been saying a new/Pro model is coming since it was originally released, I'm sure eventually those people will be right.

But Nintendo does what they want and usually makes little sense, like removing the ability for the Switch to switch and releasing the Lite.

It was old tech when it was released, but it hasn't stopped it being a brilliant machine with fantastic games and is perfect for family coop gaming.

Personally I'd just buy one and enjoy it.

Sure, but I would definitely wait now. It will be out by Christmas, although we don’t know the details about the specs so many games currently struggle on the existing hardware.

As its only for a 7yr old I highly doubt they would notice any difference in the resolution or the quality of the screen. They would just be happy to have the console and play some awesome games. Not everyone is about the latest and greatest tech.

This. And even if he waits till Xmas and then it never comes that means his kids gone 9 months without a switch when he could have just got one now

Thanks for all replies, I've been reading with interest. My 7yo is actually using my second PC system which is a 3600/1070 system so I would be selling that to fund the purchase of the Switch. I just think she'd enjoy the Switch more than she uses the PC.

I'm erring on buying the Switch after reading your comments; the new Switch seems to be at least a year away, give or take. :)
