*** Nintendo Switch ***

Some handson reviews now coming out...
Waiting for a half decent reviewer to review it properly rather than holding the switch in one hand and camera in the other....

First real look in the hand.

Quite a lot of praise for the screen, and it does look good from those side by side comparisons.

I use my Switch exclusively in handheld and I can see the OLED model being worth it.

It will be a far superior screen, just not suitable for outdoor use.

The unfortunate thing is even if it was SLIGHTLY faster I'd have been all over this Switch OLED; the built in LAN in the dock, supposedly better sound, the better screen; the FAR better kickstand, the higher internal storage; these are ALL nice to haves, but as someone who already has a v2, there isn't enough to get me to upgrade I don't think (unless I get an awesome deal).

If I still had a v1 with the weaker battery, I'd have been much more tempted; but I do feel that Nintendo is missing out on a truck ton more money by NOT offering a faster version; even if that faster chipset was just used to make load times shorter, improve overall speed of the system, and enable more solid framerates/maintain closer to native resolution in DRS titles etc, which would absolutely NOT split the market; as the games would still be designed around the standard Lite/Switch specification.

I can only guess MAYBE they will still release something next year or the year after; whether its 4K or not I don't really care, or maybe they really will make us wait until the Switch 2.

They have already proven that this split mobile/dockable hybrid idea works; has a lot of potential and can work really well; and chipsets have moved on a long way in 5+ years from the original Tegra design they used; so I really do hope they do something. They would also be mad to move away from this design for the next console; as frankly its a market segment they've almost entirely had to themselves and is only now starting to spawn proper imitators like the SteamDeck; and realistically it's Nintendo's segment to lose given just how good they are at handhelds.

Even first party or Nintendo aligned titles (like Animal Crossing and Age of Calamity) can chug a bit; so it really feels like there is room and money on the table if they bring out something that could just help ensure a smooth 60FPS 720P on the move, and 60FPS 1080P docked.

But hey, this is Nintendo.

Part of me though wonders if there really WAS a Switch Pro [or whatever they'd have called it] in the lines for this year; but the current hardware/manufacturing shortages and COVID (which hit Japan more severely than many other regions, work wise) have killed/delayed it; and what we got was essentially 'the rest' of the Switch Pro upgrade package, or at least what was ready, but without the boosted internal hardware; as the Switch OLED.

I can kinda see that. If the Switch OLED had had a faster internal chipset; and maybe even a dock supporting higher resolution output; no one would have complained AT ALL (at least seriously) about this revision, as it is the fact there is no performance boost with so many other tweaks included, makes that component of the upgrade almost seems conspicuous in it's absence. They also patented the concept of a dock with a boosted graphics chip, ala eGPU etc in it a number of years ago; more than enough time to make that a reality; so it does feel like they have been experimenting with ways to boost the Switch, which may or may not arrive before the Switch 2.

There is some evidence to suggest that COVID/Manufacturing issues theory might be correct; not least the reports that Nintendo asked SOME Devs to start making games 4k ready/4k profiles. That Nintendo have already rolled out higher clock speeds etc in some of the firmware patches, that are used by some games during loading for example, does suggest at least some in Nintendo recognise more performance would be helpful.

I highly doubt they will release something significant until the replacement for the Switch comes in 4 years. The X1 chip is around until at least 2025 (according to Nvidia) and could you imagine buying a significantly upgraded console for it to be obsolete within a couple of years! IMO a 4K switch is the replacement for the switch.

Can't wait to play Zelda on it when it arrives, next week I think. Just to replace my pc monitor with a 42" OLED when they are out and that's everything.
As Kreee said, for indoor use they are fantastic, I did have to modify a room slightly though to make the most of the TV because in the bright they don't do so well.

Saying the Bloomberg report is untrue is not exactly confirmation. They're not going to allow any word on future development with the OLED model just around the corner - they don't generally respond to articles like this one but they chose to shut it down straight away, which is unusual. Something is always in development.

I don’t think they are saying it’s untrue just that they aren’t releasing one for a while. If as the rumours suggest it could be end of 2022 that is releasing it when there is only a couple of years of life remaining for the switch so I imagine there is going to be a lot of strategic thinking about what to actually do. It’s worth noting that games take years to develop so the game developers could actually be working on the switch replacement so hence not working on a 4K switch.

These cycles generally last around 7 years which would make a 'Switch 2' launch in March 2024. Of course Nintendo always do their own thing so who knows? The Switch isn't showing any signs of slowing down. I think the end of 2022 is way too soon, personally.

Definitely it would be too late in the cycle to release an update like this and too soon in the cycle to end the current switch.

One of the companies that supposedly had a 4K dev kit has come out and denied it as well and said the Bloomberg article is not correct.
