*** Nintendo Switch ***

The price is very reasonable for what you get (accessories are a rip-off I agree), the issue is that it's up against consoles that undercut its price considerably. They don't have the tablet/screen of course but on the flip side they're more powerful, have a huge library of games and don't come off the back of the flop that was the Wii U.

Some (myself included) will buy it as a second/third console just for exclusives but there is no way the Switch would be the main/only console for even a semi-serious gamer. The games line-up is so small, not just for launch but even in 6-12 months that it's just not a viable option.

I'd also echo some other posters in this thread that the motion-sensing & IR are too gimmicky for me. Unless you're going to do VR then motion controls just get in the way of 99% of the games I've tried that offer them.

Deep down we all want the next console from whoever to be the most powerful and cheaper than everything else out on the market. However that isn't going to happen, especially with the devaluation of the pound. And with Nintendo's chosen path of not competing in the teraflops war.

I didnt really see the point of the switch before, I honestly thought it was a desperate attempt by Nintendo just to stay "current". I also thought it would crash and burn outside their domestic market.

However;

Im going to become a dad for the first time in August, the man cave will make way for the nursery and spare time to game will fade away. With no room for my desk and monitor, exclusive use of the main TV out of the question the portable mode of the Switch seems great.

The casual gaming experience the Switch delivers, along the with ability to have a proper gaming session when the situation arises really appeals to me now.

I think the golden era of video games is over, more so when you get into your 30's and your patience and interest wanes. Everything is just a rehash of a rehash. People are being more careful about what they spend their money on these days, and the days of handing over £50 for a pile of tosh that you've seen before with slightly worse graphics are going.

What about if you have a decent PC?

Nintendo & PC is ideal for me, I don't have a huge amount of time to game yet I tend to play games that are long, have a lot of depth or that have good addictive multiplayer. So I only buy a new game about every 6-8 weeks.

There are certainly a few games exclusive to other platforms that I would enjoy, but I can't quite justify getting another box to play them, and not sure I'd ever find the time for them unfortunately - Most of the games at the top of my wishlist are on PC or Nintendo platforms.

The only forced motion control game is '1,2, Switch' I think. It's optional in ARMS & Splatoon. Like the WiiU, Switch is mostly focused on traditional button pressing gameplay. I feel it's good to have options though.

Splatoon motion controls are amazing, ARMS looks like it might have nailed it aswel.

I'm hearing a lot of good things about the "HD Rumble" too.

I would prefer the Switch to be a smidgeon cheaper at £250. Its not priced out of what i would consider paying but I doubt Nintendo is making little if any loss on each console sold. Its the price of the games that really make my eyes water, £60 is ridiculous. Prices could theoretically come down in before the release date but even £50 is expensive. I know not every game will be priced that high but theres a good chance all of the top tier first party titles will be priced the same. For comparison you can pick up AAA PS4/Xbone games on release for <£40 with what i assume are much higher development costs. Peripherals are also expensive although I probably wouldn't buy any so its not an issue.

I don't know if im the only one thinking this but why is the bezel so huge? They could have added an 10mm to the screen size without affecting usage. In the hands on footage i've seen there doesn't seem to be a justification for it as fingers are positioned on the Joycons. I'm expecting a revised version to come out in 2018 to get rid it :p

One problem if you only have a PC and Switch - Rockstar.

RDR2 is obviously going be the stand out, it'll be massive when it's released.

Also, I owned a Gamecube but I can't remember it being that cheap? £129?!:eek:

GTAV came to PC, I think RDR2 will too but likely not until early next year. GTAV sold quite well on PC.

I played through GTAV on 360 and did enjoy it for the most part. I'm not a huge fan of Rockstar games myself but can appreciate why they are popular.

It came to PC eventually. If you don't mind waiting 2 years RDR2 might also however chances of it being released on PC early next year = zero.

Then again, it might never be released on PC, RDR never did.

Right - I actually thought GTAV released on PC 6 months later but it was actually 18 months, my mistake. So you're right that it would probably be aimed for late next year if at all.

EDIT: I think the reason GTAV took so long is because they were also working on the XB1/PS4 versions and still upgrading the game from 'last gen', PC version followed 5 months after XB1/PS4. That's what confused me.

I'm not really that interested in RDR2 as of now, had a loan of the first one on 360 but never really got into it, just not my kind of thing really. I think I'd always prioritize playing other games above it.

Thought it might be worth looking for a cheap Wii U now the Switch is lined up.

No chance. £250 still. £280 for the switch suddenly looks much better :p

I picked mine up towards the end of its life for £170.

Have to agree with you, I'm just into my 30's and was brought up with what I'd consider the Golden Age - SNES/Mega Drive, PS1, PS2 theres far too much focus on poor mobile games and "Enhanced Editions" of stuff thats 5 years old....

There are great games still, games that have scope and depth so big and deep hat is beyond the wildest dreams of people in the 90's (SNES era). Take Witcher 3 for example, that game is just ridiculous.

The problem is there are also much more things to try and grab our attention and many forms of home entertainment now than before. Even TV isn't just TV anymore, before if you had Sky you are spoilt for choice, now you can top up with Netflix, Prime video, Hulu, and then if you want you can watch YouTube. Plus we are now grown up our hobbies also grew up, I quite enjoy cooking or making a a good cup of coffee so there is time invested in those too.

Gaming being the sole spare time activity is long gone for me.

Yeah thats true, other more "grown up" hobbies take up gaming time nowadays!
To be fair the PS4 sitting doing nothing seem cheap compare to the camera kit that sits in a bag!

The switch launch price is actually less expensive over here than in the states.

The US is $300 ex state sales tax.

Here its £280 inc VAT (which is £228 ex vat = $278 @ $1.22 - £1)
It may actually be cheaper than £280, due to retailers setting their own pricing.

Actually it is the exact same, 280 minus vat is 233.33 and convert that to USD you get 279

I'd say a PS4 makes more sense these days. Greater no. of better exclusives. But if you must have Zelda, Mario etc - then there's no other option.

[*]Nintendo's development teams merged for 1 platform

This, imho, is the single, possible saving grace for the Switch. If Nintendo drop 3DS support and put all their efforts into developing games for a single hybrid platform, there might be enough first party titles to make it worthwhile. They will have to step it up in terms of breadth of games from the **** poor show they gave us with the Wii and WiiU, though!
