*** Nintendo Switch ***

I think we've turned a corner now with mobile gaming and those 3DS numbers won't happen again, the mobile gaming market in any meaningful numbers now belongs to phones and tablets.

Nintendo absolutely refuses to learn from past mistakes and still keeps coming up with gimmicky systems and controllers when all we really want is to play Mario etc. on a normal console with a standard controller or just go software only and drop out of the console business, I think Nintendo would be far more successful as a software only company with there IP's running across other platforms.

3DS numbers won't happen again, but they will sell enough to turn over a healthy profit.

IIRC Nintendo are still worth more than Sony, so they have little to worry about and will continue to do as they want without worrying too much. I for one love that they just do what they want, it's refreshing.

Nintendo + PC is IMO the best gaming system available.

Completely wrong.
Every Nintendo console has sold less than the previous one - the Wii was the exception. Not enough people want to play Mario, or they don't want to play it enough to buy another console. Nintendo do need to do things differently as the hardcore gamers aren't going to be playing Nintendo consoles.

Dropping AMD would be a good choice. Nvidia's performance per watt has been far better for years now and that is a key metric for Nintendo.

However they better have something more than a hybrid handheld/console as the selling point as that won't be an easy sell.

My wii u has been boxed up for such a long time. Dont get me wrong, cracking games and the system was actually really good but some of the design choices witht he gamepad often put me off turning the system on. If all games could be played with the pro controller, and the gamepad not need to be turned on, i would have enjoyed it more

Saying that i am tempted lately to set it back up and retry splatoon, a bit of a sleeper hit i think

Bit im still interested in the NX, hope they have learnt a lot from the wii u. I wont buy it day one but wouldnt be put off based on my wii u experiance

Interesting i wonder if you can dock the portable into a docking station which has more powerful GPU like the Razer Core.

It's possible, as Nintendo do have an approved 'Supplemental Computing Device' patent (info). There is also the question that if games run at a higher resolution on the TV than the portable, how will they deal with performance/graphical compromises between the two?.

The thing I find most exciting is that Nintendo will be able to focus on developing games for a single main platform.

The same way everyone else does (XBox One/Scorpio and PS4/Neo).

I agree having Nintendo focus sing on one platform and having the choice of where I play is very appealing.

Nintendo have proved over the years that pure graphic performance isn't always whats most important to gamers, the merged handheld/home console platform could work for them in these days where for the wider market (non-hardcore gamers) quick fix, mobile type games appear to have taken over.

Those are 2 different machines that are expected to run different configurations though, where NX (presumably) is 1 machine that may output at different resolutions depending on display output. Or are you saying you expect it to be more powerful while docked?

It's not really a big obstacle for them to get around, I'm just curious how they will approach it - will the machine run higher clocks while docked? will resources be held back while in portable mode to ensure consistency for the more demanding TV experience?.

One of the major things that has changed since the 3ds is certainly mobile gaming as a platform and with that comes pricing. Currently nintendos digital prices arent great. Obviously the games are more substantial than iod games but still an arguement to be had

When it's docked it will have a performance boost from the hardware in the docking platform. This is what all the patents point to.

Yeah that would be a good solution - I was questioning what would happen if that wasn't the case.

Many patents (especially from big companies) never make it past R&D, Nintendo have some crazy ideas patented but the SCD one seems quite viable.

We'll find out soon I guess.

This ain't sounding promising.... :(

All I want is a new proper console with neo type specs god dam it. Xenonblade, new Mario's, Zelda.. hell even Pikmin on something that's has enough performance to let devs run wild :(

I must be the only one comfortable with the idea of a hybrid style console. Our Wii U is used daily because of off-TV and such. It's incredibly well used and gamed on. Though the graphics on games like Uncharted are excellent, I don't feel that Mario or Zelda would be all that improved by some ridiculously powerful system, like those odd tech-demos people do in the Unreal Engine.

If it unifies the game library potential, that would be amazing.

Handheld? Pfffttt.

Potentially still interested if you can dock it into a home console, but no real interest in portable gaming.

I'm the opposite. Though I initially diskliked the idea that we wouldn't be getting a proper and traditional home console, I've warmed up to it.

I hate playing games on the 3DS. Games that require a lot of button mashing control-wise like Smash Bros and Monster Hunter can be uncomfortable to play, I used to get handcramps, despite having an XL and the circle pad pro.

For me, the 3DS needs a successor more than the WiiU does. Despite the technical inferiority of the WiiU, the 3DS is even more technically inferior, compared to the competition, even when taking into account the pricing. Smartphones half the price have 720p screens and can play HD content... the resolution of the 3DS is ancient by comparison (slightly less than original PSP).

If what they say is true, then this handheld will be 720p or better and sounds like it will plug in to a base station to be played more like a home console. As long as it gets the full home console experience when it does, I'm good with it. And I mean the whole shebang: multiple controllers, local multiplayer, backwards compatibility, splitscreen etc. No region-lock is a good thing and a way forward. I know many people pirated region-locked 3DS games and such, since there was no way they could legitimately play it on their 3DS.

All that said, the limited specs don't seem very forward-compatible and could limit the system in terms of both the types of games that can be created for it and third party support. Unless they do something crazy with the base station and released upgraded versions with more additional power or something. Wohich would seem more in line with what the other 2 companies are trying to do.
