*** Nintendo Switch ***

Is it possible the Nx will be built as a handheld/home console in the way the PS4/Neo are being done?

Like the games must be playable on both and can have just better graphics when you are hooked up. So main console would be like Neo running a neo like build, and the handheld would be like the PS4, running that build?

Obviously i'm not saying they will be anywhere near that in power terms, just thinking in terms for devs?

Nintendo were almost half way there anyway with the Wii-U screen in the pad.

It would not surprise me if the NX is a handheld with a "cradle" like device that has a more powerful GPU when docked and plugs in to your TV.

Take your games anywhere by undocking, the smaller screen/resolution would enable a lower setting profile to be used to work on the Handheld GPU.

How cost effective that would be I have no idea.

I think the problem with that is that to get a system powerful enough to satisfy the home console crowd will require power hungry internals. So when undocked those internals will still need juice - and then you're suddenly into around 30-45 minutes of battery life, even given a resolution drop, undocked!

Some new details/rumours here: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-07-26-nx-is-a-portable-console-with-detachable-controllers

Looks like an updated mobile device that should be based on the Tegra X2. It features detachable controllers so you can dock the main unit for gaming on a screen.

It is rumoured that the X2 could provide performance close to the current gen (thinking close to the Xbone).
Nowhere does it say that it 'should be based on the Tegra X2'. Dev kits are using X1 and any X2 talk is completely speculative. And we really know NOTHING about the performance of the X2. I highly doubt it will be anywhere near as powerful as current gen consoles. These claims of 'as powerful as console' when it comes to mobile power are usually always highly exaggerated when you look at what they can really do, and not just on-paper, cherry-picked specs.

Anyways, I dont know what to think. I really just want a solid, reasonably powerful Nintendo console. Something that would give multiplatform developers good reason to want to develop for it alongside XB1/PS4/PC development. That's clearly never going to happen. Nintendo wants to live in its own little bubble. Which means it will forever be considered as a secondary system for most 'core' gamers.

The idea of it being a hybrid handheld/console does mean it has the potential for more games than you'd usually get if you only got a Wii U or only a 3DS or whatever, but the console experience is going to be compromised. I also dont like the idea of having to constantly plug in and unplug the system if I want to change how I'm using it. Plus having to charge the thing all the time, of course.

I surely hope this comes in at $250 or under. If it's X2, it almost certainly wont, though. But I'm just not going to spend $300+ for something that only plays Nintendo games, sorry. Especially when Nintendo games rarely drop in price, meaning you are often forced to pay near enough full price even for years old games.

The related article about Nvidia speculated whether this will use Tegra X2 or stick with X1. I never said there were solid details, only the rumours. I'm not here to have an argument take from this what you will.

Anyway I see it as a poweful handheld myself, it just happens you can dock it. Like having Wii U power in your pocket.

It's cool man, not trying to argue either, just make a minor correction about how it 'should use the X2' as you said. Could very well be X1 still. Would probably be much cheaper for Nintendo...

Would it be absurd to think they could have a Tegra X1 in the handheld unit and then another one in the base unit for additional power? I remember having two Pentium IIs in my home computer many moons ago but these days I know nothing. :D

I am still going to take all rumours with caution as I am sure AMD have reported design wins for Nintendo and I also remember reading that it was x86 rather than ARM.

It being something other than x86 has been one of the longest running rumours, and this seems to substantiate that.

Why do you want a 3rd identical console with the same games released as the other two anyway? The other two have a 3 year head start and juiced up revisions on the horizon already, why would Nintendo want to directly compete with that? As long as the games run at a locked 30/60 FPS, have a great art style and are fun, you can keep your 4k etc, I have a PC for that.

Because Nintendo first party games aren't a patch on what they used to be. The snes and N64 had amazing first party titles and some great 3rd party. The GC less so, but still decent. Less so with the Wii and even less with the WiiU. In short - Nintendo aren't enough on their own anymore.
