Yay... Lots of 3DS love

Well the last rapid fire spotlight about this long was about 12mins of constant Switch announcements then the same for the 3DS? Announcing something like 10-15 games of each, roughly? Something like that!

I'll be watching either way :)

Now, when watching one of these videos the other day my gf was next to me. And she wasn't paying too much attention until a 2D side scroller was being shown, straight away her interest peaked and she said "oh I like those kinds of games" then when a 3D game was shown "ah I don't like those ones, they're too complicated"

I found this very interesting. From the perspective of someone who doesn't really have an interest in gaming and only occasionally played her brothers mega drive when she was a kid was straight away interested in a 16bit still game with simple but useable mechanics.

I wonder how many people find these huge AAA graphically intensive games actually...off putting? Aside from avid gamers obviously (people typically outside of this here OcUK community) I wonder how many would actually be more tempted by a simple side scroller over a AAA'er.

hmmm, random food for thoughts.

I think another aspect of the 2D vs 3D experience is your expectations. It is not just that 3D is more complicated, but also you expect there to be more depth, something you really sink time into - a commitment in many cases. Whereas 2D side scrollers give you the immediate impression of something light hearted and fun.

The above of course is not always the case, but I think it tends to be what one expects - for example, I myself stopped enjoying Mario around the time it went 3D. Not because the games are worse, but because when I play a 3D game I have a level of expectation to the game, I want something with depth to really get into, whereas Mario is a fairly simplistic game, which ironically as a 2D game was its charm, but as a 3D game I just find it disappointing.
So as a gamer I have the opposite opinion of your gf, while 2D is fun to mess around with for a bit of time killer and fun for me, 3D is where I have high expectations of a game - where she is put off due to a belief of more complexity (and depth/time commitment) I am intrigued by it but quickly put off when I realize it is not the case and actually has more of a '2D standard' to it.

Problem with the 3DS is the pricing for the games still.
I'd like to see a lot more added to the Nintendo Classics. At £15/20 I'll bite on a handheld game, £30/40 I'll just give it a miss!

Really hoping to see some Switch bundles launched soon! Totally sold on Wii U's Breath of the Wild, want to play it on the move now!

!

This is the reason I've never bought a Nintendo handheld console since the original DS. I just don't feel the games out for it warrant the price they're charging compared to the home consoles.

Up until that point I'd owned every single handheld since the original Gameboy but I never felt the games could justify the asking price once they started hitting £30-40. Especially given what's on offer on tablets and phones these days.

August 29th release date, looks an interesting concept. I'll no doubt pick it up, always got time for some Mario action :)

Hah I totally called it when I said it may be like xcom :D. It was kinda heavily implied from those leaked slides though.

Looks fantastic visually. The exploration seemed a little tame from what was shown, but combat is promising. Will have to wait and see if it has the variety and holds up mechanically.

It'll be in it Phate, will get 30 seconds of the Showcase no doubt as they run through games coming out this year.

Fair enough :)

Just watched the 5 min gameplay video. Looks good but not my kind of thing I don't think. However I think it could be good for on the go!

I've quite recently got into the Turn Based Strategy genre so this mash up might do it for me :)

I think what's important tomorrow is to remember than when the feed ends and jumps into Nintendo Treehouse everyone needs to keep watching at least for that hour where more announcements will be made.

Yup! Its 30mins of rapid fire then 1hr of exploring it further with more announcements. Rather than "nintendo only has a short announcement bit"

I am not working tomorrow so I can spam the **** out of this thread for you anyone who cannot watch it :p
