*** Nintendo Switch ***

3 hours is a bit grim tbh, I wonder if users can select to not run at maximum.

If i'm playing the switch not docked it will be for travelling, and 3 hours is not enough for that. I'd expect it to be able to do a cross continent flight, so would expect 5 hours from the thing.

I doubt it'll give you an option whilst it's running on battery since presumably it'll already be running in the lower power mode. I guess the answer will be to carry around a USB battery pack so you can charge it away from power.

It was never going to be more than around 3-4 hours. Just buy a battery pack.

To be fair, whilst running games the battery life of most phones/tablets will only be in the region of 2-3 hours. Given the Switch is basically the same tech I never really expected it to last much more than 3-4 (assuming a larger battery than your typical phone and some optimisation) whilst playing intensive 3D games like Zelda. But as others have said personally I'm OK with that if it has quick charge support.

The 3DS is stated as 3-5 hours so it's probably a safe bet they'll aim for a similar figure with the switch. I'd obviously rather it last longer but I think anyone expecting more will be disappointed.

If anything I'm more concerned at the rumours of the battery not being user-replaceable than the run time itself.

Phones do have a similar battery life but then so much more is running on them. Id expect a 5 hour bettery on a dedicated gaming device tbh.

Battery life is in the expected region for me.

It's unlikely that I'll use the device outside/away from a charging point for over 3 hours.

I'd have loved to have had this over Christmas. I've not been able to game over the festive period due to house guests etc.

Microsoft play anywhere, play gears on your PC :)

My brother already has Gears of War 4 Ultimate (I bought him the game) on PC and I already knew about the play anywhere. Regardless there were still a few things that disappointed me about GoW4 (No horde splitscreen? - on PC at least).

All I want is a new Metroid Prime game. Announce that and i'll buy a Switch instantly.

Phendrana Drifts really is the best music in the series, even better is the Metal cover of it. Literally earporn. Google Metroid Metal Stemage. However, as to a new game, I remember reading a rumour somewhere that there are no new Metroid titles on the horizon and Retro Studio's (the guys who made the Prime series) aren't working on a Metroid game either.

The Virtual Console thing remaining the same was a disappointment, but 3 hours battery life was the killing blow. Granted, these are rumours, but I would have bought a Switch at launch if it was guaranteed to have decent battery life. Especially since I'm considering a holiday to a very faraway place during Easter (just after Switch launches). 3 hours is nothing on a plane journey, let alone battery life on a dedicated gaming handheld.

This sounds like the original 3DS launch all over again. Something I don't want to touch. I guess now we must hope that either that rumour is false, or that Nintendo release a model with improved battery life very soon. I knew that the likely Maxwell SOC would be a disadvantage to the Switch (less efficiency contributing to bad battery life). If this is all true... I guess: I told ya so.

Edit: And anyone who says it's expected: I was using my 2 year old Windows 10 tablet yesterday. Granted it wasn't gaming, but at half battery I still had 4 hours of usage left.

What has that got to do with anything? My phone gets 7 hours battery life when watching movies but stick a game on and it lasts less than 2. That's in air plane mode with it doing nothing else.

On a plane just bring a battery pack as you'll be stationary anyway. So many knickers in a twist over nothing!

People moaning for the sake of moaining.

4 hours is fine. How often these days are we 4 hours away from charging? I was in Vietnam, on a bus, in the middle of no-where, I still had power. Most trains in the UK have USB ports, and most international flights have them too.

If not just buy a power pack.

Plus it's better now to have a more realistic view on the battery life. You don't want to over hype the switch too much or people might be left disappointed. Besides, again, this is meant to be full whack. I'd imagine very little games will be designed to play at full OTG. You'll be looking at 4-5 hours gaming time. But that's just gaming, I do believe this will be like the wii u pad and you'll have a web browser and access to apps. So something like 6-8 hours battery life could easily be achievable when mixing it up.

Edit: I say that while fueling the hype :D

It is kinda funny watching everyone's wants here. People just aren't being realistic.

Yeah, it's odd. Everyone's like :-

"if it doesn't last at least 6+ hours when gaming I'm not buying it and it'll be a total failure"

AND

"It needs to be a least as powerful as a home console like the PS4/XB1 or it's a complete disaster"

Nintendo are just using basically off-the-shelf chipsets and batteries. You can't expect them to defy the laws of physics by inventing something which delivers longer battery life and more CPU/GPU power than the companies who are actually designing the hardware both Nintendo and their competitors are using!

I never read any complaints about the battery life on the previous DS range or it ever being a deal breaker that they were only rated for 3-5 hours.

Looking further back at the older range some of the original Nintendo DS, DS lite and Gameboy Advance range did last closer to 8 hours. Perhaps that's what people are basing their expectations on? However that was really quite basic hardware and only capable of running simple 2D games. I'm sure when playing something like Shovel Knight on the Switch you'll get closer 8 hours but not on a modern 3D title which actually taxes the hardware.

ANYWAY, DRAWING A LINE UNDER THIS POINTLESS SPECULATION.....................................

Let's try and get away from bickering over battery life/hardware specs we don't yet know and focus on the games as this thread is degenerating into an argument over nothing.

I've never owned a Wii U or a 3DS so have missed out on pretty much every Nintendo exclusive over the last 5 years. I'm sure a lot of people will be in this situation. I was hoping to pick up a cheap second hand WiiU or 3DS with some games but looking on Amazon and eBay stock seems to have dried up and prices are through the roof for both games and hardware so it doesn't look seem like there's any point in pursuing that at the moment now the Switch is about to be released,

Any recommendations for Wii U or 3DS games we should keep an eye out for ports or updates of on the Swtich?

I've been having a scan and so far I'm interested in :-

Mario Kart
Splatoon
New Super Mario Bros
Pokemon
Fire Emblem
Mario Maker

Is there anything else I should be keeping an eye out for WiiU/3DS ports of?

I'd quite like to see a new version of Super Mario Galaxy as I loved both those games on the Wii!

I've heard we're likely to see Super Mario Sunshine ported across but I'd also much prefer to see an HD updated version of Mario Galaxy as Sunshine was probably one of my least favourite instalments in the series. I didn't care for the jetpack/watergun thing you had most of the time in Mario Sunshine which I felt it took away from the platforming aspect of the games.

I wonder if we'll see a variation in pricing between some of the games on the Switch given it'll be replacing both the Wii and 3DS. Handheld games have always historically been cheaper than the home console versions which has made sense since they tended to be more simplistic.

In all honesty, I'd be happier with 5 hours battery. A good amount more than a measly 3. Still a shame if it misses out on efficiency due to using older chips. Regardless, that battery life is the only thing holding it back. Specs-wise its amazing for a handheld.

Decided I'll e getting rid of my Vita and PSTV to raise funds for this. This will largely remove the need for the other two devices.
