*** Nintendo Switch ***

Well after buying Bomberman for £40, this is a bargain! Everywhere else I have read online about Sonic was surprised by the low price. I'm one of them, I think honestly they could righty ask for a little more. Day 1 purchase for me.

If it's £15.99 on the switch I'll eat my hat

It will probably be £15.99 on xbox and ps4 but when talking about the switch, add an extra 40% nintendo tax

I'd be amazed if it was that cheap, and if so, absolutely day one purchase

Anyone looking forward to the online functionality and voice chat, I have some bad news...

It's these kind of bad decisions that put me off from buying a Switch, let alone thinking the online is worth paying for. I refuse to use an online service that is somehow worse than what the original Xbox managed almost 15 years ago. And it's not a factor of performance capabilities either, the Switch is a lot more powerful than the PS3 or Xbox 360, so that isn't an excuse since all of those weaker hardware managed voice chat with no issues. Heck, even the DS could manage voice chat without any extra pieces of hardware (outside of the microphone)!

I wonder who would defend this kind of decision Nintendo has made? I've seen comments in other videos where even big Nintendo fanboys are upset at needing a smartphone app for the online functionality. Or maybe I underestimate Nintendo fans?

I'm let down and disappointed by the fact that I won't be able to play online Monster Hunter without paying for Nintendo's unworthy online services. But that's when the dual nature of the Switch will come to the rescue. I'll still be able to play local ad-hoc multiplayer on such games, so it's not the end of the world.

On more positive news, Nintendo's E3 Nintendo Direct will be live streamed on Tuesday 13th June at 5pm in the UK (original time is 9am PST American time). Which works out great for a lot of us. I'm normally home from work by then, so I should be able to catch it live. Hopefully they announce plenty of new games, Monster Hunter XX for the West, console bundles and such. Thusly, I realise it's probably best if I hold back on buying anything Switch related until then. There could be sales related to the announcements or even new accessories to purchase.

A double-edged sword is that I've given up on plans to buy a new graphics card for my PC (after AMD's disappointment at computex). Sad on the PC front, but on the bright side, it means more money to spend on Switch. I've been reading up about Switch microSD cards and it seems it's probably best to wait till holiday sales to buy one, especially since we probably won't need extra storage until then. Worst case scenario, I've got a spare 32gb one in my old phone to tide me over.

The voice chat doesn't bother me, I have zero interest in MP gaming on the Switch. That being said it's pretty **** poor for those that do want it. Having to use your phone for voice chat? Madness.

I'm more interested in what they're doing with the VC, hopefully hear something at E3?

Well nintendo have confirmed the dispatch of my switch. My pro controller arrived a week or so ago.

I am in the US at the moment, am I right in thinking and reading the console is region free so I can pick up a couple of switch games over here and fire it up on my UK console?

Yep, I was tempted to pick up a few games while in Vegas during the week but didn't get time :(

Some news on the subscription. Looks like they've dropped the limited time on monthly games thing.

Nintendo confirmed that this monthly plan has indeed changed, telling Kotaku: “Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have ongoing access to a library of classic games with added online play. Users can play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription.”

Nintendo adds: “Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will be able to play a wide variety of classic games, including Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario. More games will be announced at a later date. At launch the classic game library will include NES games. Super NES games continue to be under consideration, but we have nothing further to announce at this time.”

I'm not bothered about chat but I'll reserve judgement until I've seen the thing running. Too much knee jerking going on for my liking.

More news on the online subscription:

Same stuff as above post, but some more details. They will be adding online multiplayer to older games like the ones on NES and SNES. You also get eShop deals.

The good news is that it won't be here till 2018, so we can play Splatoon/Mario Kart/Arms online to death until then. And then if you want to continue playing online then a yearly subscription is $20. Idk how it will translate to us in GBP, but at least the online is priced appropriately for all the nonsense they've been pulling with stuff like the headset and seperate app. Not too shabby after they've been overpricing all the games lol.

I still won't be getting the online, not until they move all the online stuff off an app on an external device and put all that on the Switch itself.

I don't mind playing £18/$20 a year to have access to a classic games, I dont play online much and have not done for years but I want to be able to bring over my purchase history from my Wii and Wii U with no extra cost.

Purchase history I don't see that happening. Though when MS went BC it was a nice and unexpected surprise to see my old digital 360 games suddenly become available on the XB1. You never know, I suppose.

£20 I am happy with.

The headset is number 3 best seller already on Amazon Japan. If you put a squid on it they'll lap it up.

Previously the online service was only going to offer a single VC game to play per month and only during that month.

Now they've changed it:
"Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have ongoing access to a library of classic games with added online play. Users can play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription."

Much better!

I have no regrets on Bomberman despite its price. It has turned out to be the best buy for me (aside from Zelda for when on my lonesome). Mariokart has had very little time on my console because Bomberman has just been more of a laugh for me and my mates. Its hectic simplicity makes it the perfect local multiplayer game. I am curious to see how it plays with 8 people!

Regarding the online stuff, $20 a year sounds good to me for access to VC games, I originally was not planning on bothering with Nintendos online stuff - mainly because I bought it for the local multiplayer and have no interest in playing online, I have my PC for that kind of gaming. But a yearly sub that cheap to play old school games, I am in

Yeah I am really pleased about the subscription price and the access to games with online multiplayer. The voice is annoying and I think rubbish but anything could happen between now and when it goes live.

That is utterly ridiculous. So this means that the Switch headphone port is only for audio out? Then the application and smartphone deal with the voice comms? Or does the Switch have the hardware for both audio in and out through that port?

I am so glad I sold my Switch a month ago, I'll stick to emulators for old games instead of buying rehashed version for £16 a pop.

I'm really looking forward to what third parties are going to do, I'm on for buying more first party titles but I'd like some more western games.

Portable Fallout and I may have a heart attack
