Basically my perceptions of how much a car can make you laugh out loud were forcefully realigned last night.
One of the guys who comes to our monthly meet has an R32, dark grey (i cant remember the real name of the colour anymore). He got it 5 months ago as a pristine, unmolested R32, 5 months later it has had ££££s put into the engine. Someone has really put in the wrench time, its an awesome machine.
He turns up to the meet and has a misfire. The tools come out, we go straight for the plugs, the gaps looked odd, so our local guru regapped them and they were refitted, no more misfire.
I had the chance to go out for a run in the car. 4wd in the past hasnt made a lot of sense to me as i had only been in cars with 300-400bhp. This car, however, on sensible settings, had 530lbft @ 3500rpm and 630-650bhp @7700rpm. The blower was (from memory) a T76, large enough that i could have fitted the turbo from my golf comfortably inside his turbo.
The car ran on 10 inch wide wheels all round with trackday cut-slicks (whatever you call them) on the rear. In first gear this thing would light up and squiggle down the road with what seemed like very little provocation, it would squirm in 2nd.
On a stretch of tarmac that my M3 can see 120, this thing saw 150 with ease and was utterly relentless
Oddly, the way that the car would get out of shape and do lurid things almost felt benign, but that could have been down to driver talent, I don’t know. The car just made perfect sense, the ballistic level of fun in such a compact package, everyone should have one, but the costs involved seem to be totally prohibitive, but it doesn’t stop it feeling like I absolutely need one in my life
