I used to get people like the OP "racing" me all the time when I had my R34 GTR. I'd just let them overtake because I couldn't be bothered to waste the petrol. Little did I know that like the OP they were probably jumping straight out of the car onto a forum to talk about how they "kept up with a Skyline".

Ive been looking into R34's recently as a possible next car. How long did you have yours? Are there any good places to go to for information on them? Im just after running costs, insurance etc. Sorry for the thread hijack.

OP - youre getting boring now. I dont believe a GTR at full speed would "creep away" from you. It would most likely outhandle and outpace your MX5 if the driver was really trying.

I've had a late 80's Carrera 4 and an early 90's Carrera (both approx 250bhp) have a play with me recently and we were about evens on a dual carraigeway more or less. They were just edging towards me.

The Carrera 4 was chasing me after I do my usual hoon to work, the other was going 40mph in a 60 and matchmed my speed as I was trying to overtake. He eventually had to back off thanks to his utter douchebaggery as I moved about 1" from the his car before I ran out of road. Didn't seem to like that much, shoulda bought a Turbo.

But these tales are pointless. I'm certain they were going for it but I had the jump on both anyway, they had much more to lose than myself and after all we were on public roads. It's not so bad when you're on your own, but when you add an unknown 3rd party into a 'race' things can get ugly fast.

My most amusing moment was with what seemed to be an MTM A4 Avant (exhaustt, intercooler), however it was towing a trailer. I was passing it on the dual carraigeway thinking it would be cruising, then it unleashed all maner of godliness and showed me who's boss. I thought the trailer was gonna hit the ground as the back end squatted down. We ran for about a mile then he let me past again and we both had a big grin on our face. Good show!

I sometimes find myself in the position of the GTR driver. I'll be at the lights in the Z4M and they'll be a modified hatchback or similar next to me. Now my natural inclination in any situation where I am at the lights with nothing in front is to pull away swiftly. Not because I'm racing, merely because I like to have the road clear in front of me as it is one less thing to worry about on the streets of London village when you're constantly keeping track of all the maniacs around you. I don't dump the clutch and go for a full throttle launch, but even with moderate acceleration my car will be up to 30mph quicker than most.

Now if said hatchback gives it everything he has, he is most likely to keep up with me or even pass me. As soon as I notice this I always back off to let him take the lead as I really don't want to be in some sort of drag race on the public roads. The number of times I've then had said hatchback roll down its windows at the next set of lights when we're stationary and hurl some sort of abuse about how much quicker their car is than mine is unreal. Instinct used to be that I would then launch with maximum attack to leave them for dust but these days I really can't be bothered as I value my car too much and so I generally politely accept defeat and let them be on their merry way again.

To the OP, I wonder if the GTR owner perhaps had a similar mentality. Your car is exceptionally quick and as far as bang-for-buck goes probably peerless, but I can't imagine that in half a mile of road, the GTR wouldn't have a commanding lead over you if he were really going for it. Power to Weight ratio (which I think are quite close between yours and his if memory serves me right) can only help for so long until you run out of puff.

good point why bother opeing a thread if u dident race him on pub roads makes life more exciting

Pulled over and spoke to him and he's a top bloke who was genuinely interested in the car.

Also I guess it must be a lot more friendly in Scotland than down South. If someone in an old, albeit fast, car pulled over to speak to me after having sat on my chuff up to illegal speeds, in what might appear a menacing and aggressive driving manner, the last thing I would do is pull over to speak to you. I would fear for being stabbed in the face and car jacked. :p

Durzel have you still got your R34 GTR?
No, sold it a while ago now.

I had mine about a year which I figured was a good length of time to enjoy it without feeling like it was dominating my life expenses wise. As it turned out it was cheaper than I was anticipating to run, only thing that went wrong with it was a xenon bulb (that for some reason cost £200 to replace). Petrol is obviously the major running cost, £50 for <180 miles.

The bad part is that because no main dealers will touch them you're at the mercy of independent tuners to get them serviced, etc. I pretty much expected them to just roll a tombola to tell me how much I would be paying for the latest oil change & tuneup. When it came to selling it I had a book full of receipts with wildly differing amounts on them, for ostensibly the same (or very similar) amount of work.

If you have a good relationship with a tuner then I'm sure it would be a better experience, but having a good relationship seems to involve writing blank cheques and/or throwing a lot of money regularly at them.

That's the big advantage of the new GTR imo - it's backed by Nissan themselves. As crap as main dealer service can be some times at least its backed by an entity you can moan at, and you can be sure of a reasonable level of consistent pricing, etc.

As for more info - www.gtr.co.uk would be the place to go.

1. He followed me into an industrial estate, not the other way around, and got out and started asking about the car.
2. I never said I had a faster car. Of course I don't, and all things being equal he would pull away. What I did say was that given a jump on the GTR it took him quite a long time to catch up.
3. I never said my car is better, faster or more desirable than the GTR. It ISN'T. I also specifically said how impressed I was with it, and I want one.
4. He was at WOT.
5. A lot of you guys need to chill out.

With regards to a build log, I haven't really got one, but the rough specs are:

* Standard 1.8 BP Engine
* BEGI S3 Turbo Kit, which includes cast manifold, GT2554R turbo, seperated gasses stainless downpipe, Front mount intercooler
* Megasquirt ECU which provides flat ****, launch control, electronic boost control, full spark adjustment etc.
* RC 550cc Injectors
* All the other bits and bobs that go along with an install like this. 2.5" exhaust, decat, forge recirc valve, uprated clutch, torsen LSD (standard).

up north they dont seem to be anywhere near as terrified of merely making eye contact with other drivers on the road so im not suprised a couple petrol heads stopped to have a chat about cars.

1. In that case I would have been terrified in your shoes he was going to batter me. There was that thread in here on the weekend about someone being assaulted for overtaking someone.

2. I didn't say you said you had a faster car.

3. I still didn't say you said you had a faster car. And I certainly don't think you said you had a more desirable car than a GTR. I think I actually said I believe you have a fast car and commented on its excellent power-to-weight-ratio and just expressed an opinion that perhaps the GTR wasn't quite on the boil.

4. I don't know what a WOT is. :o

5. I'm chilled.

I wish it were the same down here. Seriously, I was pulled up alongside a CSL at the lights the other day and gave a quick thumbs up in appreciation of his car and he flicked me the V. :( I should move.

very occassionally down south youll come across a petrol head without a stinking attitude problem. occasionally youll have a "chase", afterwards go to give a nod or a wave and they wont even look. one night i got destroyed by a vr6 turbo, we ended up parked in tesco chatting cars for half an hour

up north its entirely different, youll stop at the next lights and theyll roll their window down and ask what engine you have in your car and tell you to come along to the next honda meet (or whatever theyre driving)

much more friendly bunch

Yeah, it's great up here more or less. But the Ribble Valley is an afluent area and lends it self to self richeous idiots who have no idea about the car they've bought.

When the Top Gear FN2 vs EP3 episode was aired, every old man and his Merc wanted a play off the lights and a lot of people started asking questions in petrol stations like they've never seen one before. Odd, seeing as every man and his dog has an EP3 in the town I work but it felt nice to be approached anyway.

Sorry BigT, all the points weren't aimed at you. You were the only one I quoted though.

It was quite clear he was being friendly, we both gave the thumbs up and he was clearly having fun. Not sure where the car jacking people are coming from. Things are obviously very different where you are.

No worries mate. :)

I don't know Scotland or Fife particularly well, but the nice open roads, friendly drivers and fresh air are indeed a million miles away from speed bumps every 100 yards, speed cameras every 500 yards and general attitude problems encountered driving in London.

You know I measured my commute to the office the other day for the first time on the trip computer. 18 miles through the centre of town and it took me just under an hour and a half, average speed 13mph and average fuel consumption 16mpg. :(

You forgot to mention £29 a day to park when you get there, plus congestion charge..... ah the joys of London motoring :)

seems op actually has a quite nippy mx5, but I bet one thing for sure, the GTR owner doesn't keep his car in a gazebo :D

Haha, it was only built under the Gazebo. It now resides in the (now cleared garage).

And don't diss the Gazebo, that cost me a small fortune. £12 from Asda.
