No Man's Sky - Procedural space game

You fill the holes back up? :D

Bugger that!

Yeah, not so much OCD but kinda used to playing Cities Skylines and using the landscape tool in that game to smooth the terrain out. I now realise that it has tiddly squat relevance in this one, thankfully....!

Still I did do a much better job using the "round" beam on that tool to fill the holes in than our local council seem to do with potholes on the roads.

Anyone else find this game to be badly optimised? I have a 980ti and FPS fluctuates between 60 and 10fps on a regular basis even at 1080p. When it drops below 20 it becomes really unplayable. I've set NumHighThreads and NumLowThreads both to 4 in the config file to match my i5 2500k. My pc plays every other game I have fine.

Exactly the same for me, I don't have the same card as you but same CPU.

I'm running an open game (1gig fibre connection) for most of the day feel free to join just use me on steam link at www.steamcommunity.com/id/soya4me press the launch nms join button, don't even have to add me as friend I think.4 Players would be max but if its full will try to let you know when someone drops. I have in game chat on but prefer to use discord so I'm idling on the OCUK discord NMS channel, should you wish to use voice. You can also use enter and type text to people in the same game. You are welcome to do your own thing as well, as I don't expect we all end up doing things together all the time but it be nice try some things like missions etc in a group. Keen to test the limits of multi player, what you can and can't do Plus I'm not sure how base share works properly, want to test out how well that works. Worked on a large base all day yesterday so wouldn't mind someone taking a look and see if they can see it all.

See you out there...

Damn, discovered some major issues/bugs. For some reason the planet on which I constructed my main base yesterday has changed from a really nice world (blissful weather, relaxed sentinels) to a much more hostile world (scorching monsoons & frenzied sentinels). After checking around it seems that there are certain circumstances whereby your home base planet can change from a nice world to a hostile one :(. My suggestion is NOT to spend a huge amount of time & resources on base building till they fixed this issue. Also, another annoying bug is when repairing frigates sometimes it says it need 1 more repair but nothing is damaged, so you can't fix the damn frigate till they fixed that bug. So be careful sending your frigates on dangerous missions.

This has turned into a great game but still much to be sorted & fixed by hello.

Found myself an Exotic S Class ship!

QnySk0a.jpg

It flew into the station I was in, and I just had to own it. About 6 million credits (bought, not exchanged). The downside of course, is only 16 general slots / 4 tech slots. But at this point, I have enough exosuit inventory space that I can afford to drop a bit of starship inventory capacity for the sake of a cool-looking ship.

Its such a shame these S class ships dont have more slots. Love the stats, but thank god I've now got 48 slots in exo and another 48 in exo extra cargo.

Got it to somewhat stable by deleting the TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML file and starting again. I left NumHighThreads and NumLowThreads at default but found out that TexturePageSizeKb needs to be set to the GB of your graphic card. Mine was something daft like 64 by default. This and setting max fps to 90 instead of max seems to be performing well at the moment.

This site says something different -

TextureStreamingEx increases stability because it loads in lower quality textures before your pc can load in higher ones. setting this off will add more stuttering. leave it alone (in the case all textures ingame remain blurry and won't load in higher quality ones you can turn this Off but it won't do much good to your FPS)

TexturePageSizeKb is the quality of those streamed textures, so by setting streaming to OFF, this will have NO effect. it has nothing to do with vram, and increasing it will defeat the purpose of texture streaming. just leave it alone

if i set mine to match my gpu memory in KB then the game wont even load for me.

That's actually not true, that's not video memory size. You want to leave it at default, that's actual virtual memory. If you've got loads of vram then leave it low.

Ah fair enough. Too much misleading info when you try to research performance issues with this game.

I guess that is the trade off and why most people buy an exotic in addition to their main ship. I am happy with my 47 slot explorer ship, although it is quite ugly. Haven’t found anything much better other than a high slot fighter ages ago which I wish I had kept.

This site is kind of quoting Hello Games themselves so you can be sure it's good info'

Quote from HG (or at least a moderator on reddit who got it from them)
  • UseArbSparseTexture causes Nvidia drivers to crash

  • TexturePageSizeKb is the minimum size texture to stream, and while many people seem to think this is their VRAM and are setting it to enormous levels, this is not the case.

  • People are setting MaxFrameRate to ridiculous things, like 1000 -that sets the physics timestep - running Havok at 1000fps is not good for performance.

  • NumHighThreads and NumLowThreads - setting those too high will cause stuttering

How are you making so much money out of interest?
To start with, harvesting those larval core things you get around abandoned buildings. Use jetpack to stand on top of the building to get out of the way of the scary critters and plan which one you're going for next.

Now though, it's mostly running missions. Some of them reward things like cryo chambers wich you can sell for about 5mil, or hot ice which you can sell for 2mil.

Anyone tried this on an ultrawide monitor, how does it scale?

About to go to bed but just tried it on my 2nd screen. Looks good and didn't notice anything odd while running around for few minutes, maybe a little stretched in inventory. If I have time I'll play on it tomorrow and let you know if no one else gets back to you.
