No Man's Sky - Procedural space game

No DLC plans. They said that DLC in the traditional sense(added content) wouldn't make much sense for the game.

But they do plan on continuing to support the game post-launch, yes. It will be more feature/systems-related updates, though.

Yeah, sorry that's what I meant. Not dlc, but they are working on an update for it already.

I am already preparing my prog rock playlist to have on in the background for when I fire this up...having some Yes going seems entirely appropriate as it looks like a Roger Dean album cover!

65DaysOfStatic have done the sound track so I expect it to be pretty awesome out of the box :)

Hopefully they spend a decent amount of time building a really good VR version. It's technically very easy to get a HMD working, but adapting the game to work well in VR is another matter entirely, I'm happy to wait til it's done right.

Hold on, holdddd onnnnn...

Planets wipe and regenerate once you leave?

So, 99% of the time you simply fly around, land on a planet, look around at a procedural generated work, which doesn't even look good. Then leave?

*fake laugh* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, this game is going to fall flat on it's face.

Please explain to me how you would store all the physical changes made to 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets?

The planets aren't even stored. Each one simply exists as a single 64 bit binary string.

Why would you ever go back to the same spot? Apart from anything, just finding the same spot on the same planet in the same system will be a hell of a mission on it's own.

Besides it would be technically impossible to store the geometry and other deltas for the number of planets involved.

The planets stay the same, but any changes you make to them reset once you leave.

You could probably head back to orbit, warp to another system, come back again and go get the same resources....most likely, although it's possible they have a mechanism in place to prevent it.

I suspect the biomes are a mixture of truly random and deterministic procedural generation, so it's possible that resource locations change on each visit even if the terrain and other things don't.

But really, if you're playing the game like that, you might as well just repeatedly punch yourself in the balls.

Aren't all locations meant to change each time you revisit the planet and no changes you make are saved?

I assume you must be able to return to the same 'place' on a planet as your expected to interact with objects on them multiple times, having left and gone elsewhere inbetween.

I.e. their will be buildings you cannot access until you have done enough exploration to understand the language of the people who built it, etc.

Yes you'll be able to go back to the same place, and it'll be the same as everything is built from deterministic algorithms, although some stuff like creature placement might include your clock in the seed so it'll be different every time.

It's been very strongly hinted throughout development though that you are unlikely to ever visit the same place twice. You're plotting your own journey through an effectively infinite world, why would you hang around in one spot? Kinda misses the point of the game. It's not an Eve where you're claiming areas of space and building bases and stuff.

Don't think XP or levels are a thing, gameplay seems to be mainly around improving your gear/language skills so you can survive more hostile environments and go more interesting places to find more exotic gear, repeat.

We haven't seen much underwater footage, but what we have seen looks very interesting. I don't think we have been shown that much avtually...at least I hope! Can't wait for this.

this is how i understand it

if you leave a planet and come back (i'm not sure how far you have to go), it will reset the changes you've made to landscape etc, but the progress you've made with languages etc will remain.

in my game if i go to the exact same planet you do, it will look exactly the same for me as it does for you. the game is proceduraly generated, but simply put it's based on a base number which never changes. so just as minecraft worlds are procedural generated, anyone can view the same minecraft world if they enter the seed.

I dont really understand this.. the release draws closer and nobody seems to know or be clear on exactly how the game works. Theres lots of "I think"s , or "perhaps" or "maybe its plays like this" and so on but surely by now they should have categorically stated how the game mechanics work (not content or anything which would be game revealing, but the mechanics of how it plays) and we should all know for certain.

Okay, just to clear some things up :

Any changes you make to a planet are saved, definitely. Anything you discover on a certain planet is saved, anything you do is saved, anything you name is saved...The developers have stated this as they would like to make it so that if anybody else ever visits the same planet as you, they will see the changes made and know that somebody was there, they want that kind of awe of finding another planet somebody has been to.

The last saw video I saw we were told that the changes we make to a planet are not changed once we leave it, in fact the whole planet is regenerated next time you visit it and that other players will not see any changes that you make either (but they will encounter the creatures that you have discovered). I don't necessarily like this idea and would be curious if anyone has a link from the devs that has info on this.

Edit: latest info I have found states that 'Changes the player makes are saved locally'.
