No Man's Sky - Procedural space game

Random placement. 18 quintillion planets. Regardless of whether you could actually see them in game or not...you are probably more likely to get run over by Nick Cage joyriding in the popemobile than being able to meet up with your friend before you died of old age, even if you were playing 24/7 for the rest of your life.

Well tbf that's not true in the current state of the game.

Loads of people have already been to planets that have been named by other players and it's been out a day or 2.

Also a few have done the EXACT same missions on same planets as others.
So the game is not as "open" as the devs said or there is a problem with the server side of things forcing players in same rough paths

This was before the 18 quintillion planets were calculated. But so what. We're all headed to the centre of the galaxy so why shouldn't we find each other eventually.

If it worked when those two players met up the other day this conversation wouldn't be happening and they wouldn't be getting negative opinions on their promise. Also, no-one has gotten ran over by Nick Cages popemobile yet, but people met up in No Mans Sky within 24 hours. ;)

Firstly....there are a lot of people playing the game, maybe a million or more. The chances of ANY of those two people being close to each other, while remote, aren't zero, which is why we've seen people find each other.

The chances of any two SPECIFIC people being in the same region of space....is vanishingly remote. You're not going to be playing with your buddies, and you never were.

Planets are built from a seed. Everything on the planet is deterministic based on that seed. Of course everything is going to be identical on the same planet for different players.

It's possible the MP just isn't working properly.

I suspect it's using a similar system to ED and it took Frontier months to get that working reliably (and it still has issues 2 years on). It's a p2p system so it's kinda flakey. But the difference is ED had a long beta for testing it, NMS has not.

Just like the exploit with the stolen copy, people are jumping to conclusions. They are busy getting the PC game ready, hence no preload. I am sure they will address this in due course. Gamers are a strange bunch. Tbh based on a lot of the fuss surrounding this game I can't say I want to meet many in it.

Except people can move around, communicate and co-ordinate. Even if they're randomly distributed at any point in time, a calculation like that disregards the will and agency of players to act within the universe.

You don't have to jump through the same certification hoops for Steam as you do for consoles. You can work on the game right up to the last minute before you push the build for distribution. Easier to just wait and push a final build than push the old version for preload then have a (riskier) patch on top.

It's not disregarding it, it's taking that into account. You can't just jump to arbitrary points in the universe. You can only go one star at a time, and it takes fair bit of time to get your ship geared up for the next jump.

With all the will in the world and disregarding all other gameplay elements, you're still very very very very unlikely to find another specific player before you are dead.

They've repeatedly said that this is not a multiplayer game experience. If you want a game to play with your friends, you are going to be disappointed. Best if you cancel a pre-order if you have one.

All of this :) There's even videos where Sean says if you want to meat up and do things, then this isn't the game for you. Except all the redditers forget to include that sound bite.

Not convinced guys. You know he meant for there to be multiplayer and you know he made those claims. If he also said there wasn't multiplayer (link please?) then why make both statements?

I bet that me and my friend can find each other before we die. I will come back and post a screenshot of me riding shotgun with Nick Cage in his popemobile, just to prove it. :)

This isnt the point. He said clearly on multiple occasions in the past that the game is indeed multiplayer. Yes, not a multiplayer "experience" - but you would at least be able to see other players. Right now, you cant. Why? Who knows; server issues, lying, or another multitude of unknown factors. Either way, a feature that was said to be present in the game isnt. These guys dont get a free pass just 'cause they're an indie game studio - they have (potentially) straight up lied about their product. I'd love to see this situation if it was your standard AAA dev pulling this, it would be another whole different story. But no, people are rushing to their aid to defend them even though they've intentionally been deceptive, tip-toed around the matter at hand and dodged direct questions.

I'm all for giving this game a shot on Fri, but I cant believe some people are actually putting up with this.

In two minds about this, been watching Lirik playing the PS4 version, popups etc look terrible, hopefully something not present on the PC version, floating objects when mining etc to name but a few bugs.

I like the idea of exploring space and can see myself spending a good amount of time on a "planet of interest", my only worry is the game could get boring quite quickly.
