No Man's Sky

The video review above says it takes up 3.6GB of HDD space. I wonder how many times things are repeated as it's quite a small install for a vast game. The wildlife and plants etc must have been created so not everything is generated on the fly..

I love how developers can't win. 50GB, they complain. 6GB, they complain. What is the ideal size? :D

3gb of random maths generation is a lot ? I haven't got a clue why it's so small.

Same reason the original Elite fitted onto a 32k (thats 32,768 bytes total) BBC Model B. Procedural generation means most of it is calculated on the fly. If anything, I'm surprised they need 3.6gb for such a game.

There must be an amount of pre-generated assets that the engine randomly adds to planets if you get my drift. I'm just wondering if it gets a bit repetitive if there is limited assets for the engine to use. Everything I have seen so far all looks a bit similar plant dinosaur like stuff in bright colours. It would be nice to see some architecture to explore and other more advanced aliens.

I get what your saying, based on recent comments from the developers its sounds like this is just the start and regular updates should be forthcoming. My guess is that those will add further variety and content to the game as time progresses, hopefully preventing it from becoming stale.

Ive always wondered how assets work for such games, I assume theres rudimentary textures and building voxels and then multiple blueprint algorithms (i.e. a construct for grass, another for trees etc) - like reverse fractal compression - that creates the final asset

I dno - Im blinded by science...

I ordered this yesterday from Simply Games, was delivered this morning but I only managed to get on it tonight. Been on it for a couple of hours, made it off my starting planet, been to a space station and named a couple of planets.

Enjoying it so far, nice and relaxed game although the local wildlife can sometimes be noisey, I keep thinking they're going to attack me!

I think if you are comfortable with just cruising around doing your own thing with a loose narrative then you will enjoy it. If you're expecting a Mass Effect story but with huge freedom then you're going to be disappointed.

The scale of the universe is huge, the scale of the gameplay not so much but that's not to say it won't find its fans in those who just like to explore.

It's a bit of a shame it was so hyped, it would normally have garnered a reasonable number of fanatical players but the lack of next-gen games (outside of sequels) means we all probably got a bit too excited about what is actually an indie title but with AAA marketing.

Having a blast with this.

Sunk about 7 hrs into it and barely scratching the surface. I've warped 8 times so far but still haven't come across a crashed ship yet. Stuck with the first red one and it's getting difficult to balance loot with ship upgrades. You do get to the point where a better ship is a must have.

If you come across a planet that has graviton balls. Farm it for ages. They are worth a mint plus you get stacks of titanium from the sentinels who attack on sight on these planets.

It's the most relaxing game I've ever played that's managed to stay engaging. Just when fatigue starts to kick in, I come across something totally unexpected that brings me back in. There are randomly generated happenings that are very rare but great when they occur. Won't say any more than that.

User reviews 50/50 on metacritic. Probably a true reflection of this game, either love it or hate it I reckon.

Metacritic user reviews are useless, it's been review-bombed by some losers or other (as well as directing abuse at Hello Games devs on Twitter).

Well, anything that isn't a 0-2 star review might be worth reading.
