No Man's Sky

Ive always wondered how assets work for such games, I assume theres rudimentary textures and building voxels and then multiple blueprint algorithms (i.e. a construct for grass, another for trees etc) - like reverse fractal compression - that creates the final asset

I dno - Im blinded by science...

ps3ud0

Foliage is pretty straightforward to create purely algorithmically, trees, small bushes, grass etc, I expect they are pure code.

Most of the textures, probably procedural.

Sounds are probably the same, some basic waveforms that are messed with.

Building/creature static mesh components that are then algorithmically transformed, combined and blended probably make up the bulk of assets, along with text (localisation), UI, cinematics, ship sections, pickups, weapon models.

My copy should be waiting for me when I return home from work.

Can't wait to get stuck in. This and Neverwinter should keep me occupied until ROI in September. :)

I was on last night, and it seems one of those games where I think "I'll just do a little bit more, then I'm definitely logging off". Meant I was on it later than I meant to be. Roll on 5 o'clock so I can get back to it.

That's why I didn't stay up lol

I knew I'd play with the intention of doing an hour, and then still be sat there at 6am

So the chances of people meeting up as the devs said were pretty much zero, yet people have on day one or at least they would have if it worked. I wonder if it is actually possible or if the devs never catered for it to start with which they said they did.

I have a feeling this will be a start of string of disappointments as people play it and realise how little there is and feel cheated by not getting the game they expected.

I don't know why so many people have got their expectations so wrong. I've been following the game for a long time, and so far from what I've seen, it's exactly what I expected it to be.

I'm starting to get sense this game might not be for me, which is a shame. Bit disapointing to find out there is simply no way (currently) to see/interact with other players. Sounds like it'll get patched in but who knows when.

Still worried about resource collection aspects too. So many are saying it's a hindrance to the exploration factor. I guess that, without it, the game would be virtually a tech demo though as there would be no objective at all.

I might still pick it up. Just want to wait for more reactions after few days of play time has passed.

So, given the chilled out, play at your own pace, cinematic nature of this are we all agreed that PS4 and a large TV is the best way to play (if you don't have a PC attached to a large TV etc)?

I guess it'd be difficult to compare, without playing PC version also.
If it supports ultrawide resolution, it could be pretty great experience on a PC.

Can't really lose I guess, as long as you're playing it. :D

I posted earlier that I've bought an XBox before just to play certain games like Oblivion or Halo on the H.T. setup downstairs rather than my PC.

What may keep me upstairs this time though is the 21:9 monitor on the PC.

Loving it.

Not really left the first planet yet. its pretty amazing what you can do on just 1 planet, its actually quite involved with regards to the different elements and items you can find and collect.

I can see this being a huge time sink!
