North korea places missile on pad

No, vertical elevation has no bearing.
How did you come to that conclusion?

As that's what documents I've read say when talking about designing weapons to intercept ICBM. Due to the speed and projectery it's far easier targeting at launch than something coming down.

Ah ha! This is probably why Japan thinks it could be an attack. Who knows what they could make "fall" off that thing!

Aye, could put the explosive section in a part that is designed to drop off while the missile itself is still going up, though im sure that would cause some problems with weight and such

SM-3 interceptor uses infrared and radar, it's going to standout like a sore thumb even on the last stages compared to the surrounding atmosphere.

Japan succesfully tested them last year against ICBM's.

Well i deem north korea to be incredibly unpreditcable, as well as politicians around the world

Of course it's very unpredictable - in some ways. But in other ways it is very predictable. NK will make lots of noise, scream its little lungs out at the rest of the world, and then do absolutely nothing at all.

It goes over japan, they'll be incredibly edgy if it does fire and if they shoot it down NK have already said that if it is shot down it'll provoke war

Mere sabre rattling. NK threatens to declare war on the rest of the universe at least once every two years. Can you remember the last time NK actually fought anyone? I'd be surprised if you could: it was more than 50 years ago.

Means the same thing to me

Nevertheless, it is not.

Observe the following headlines:

The first three are from articles published in 2003. The fourth is from an article published in 2005. The fifth is from an article published in 2007.

Needless to say, nobody went to war with North Korea in 2003, 2005 or 2007. Examples could be multiplied.

NK war threats are practically seasonal. You can almost set your calendar by them.

Interesting stuff, one day there going to tip the boat though, and no one really knows when that might be - be it 10 years from now or 10 days

I guess it's sit and wait :)

The thing to remember is that nobody wants a war with North Korea (because hey, what would be the point?) and North Korea can't afford to launch one (because she'd get nine kinds of hell kicked out of her).

Good point, but few people actually know how bad things are inside NK itself, or who has the influence over Kim-Jong Il.

I can see a lot of NK hardliners proposing some mad ideas, while the US is still tied down in Iraq and Afghanistan, and struggling at home with big economy problems - a war in Korea would be pretty bad at this point in time.

Hope it doesnt happen, for the lives of a whole bunch of north korean soldiers' sake.

Theyve been talking about this for ages, i suppose the launch must be close now if theyve got it on the pad.

Be interesting to see what the american "consequences" are. Sending an intern over to get kim impeached?

had to be done :D

Can't believe some people are hoping that NK gets crushed.
Dictator or not, the whole country shouldn't suffer (even more) because of the actions of a few. The missile launch could be 100% purely for the satellite (peaceful mission).

Also I don't think China would be too happy for a war going on close to their borders, they are already unhappy with the US as it is. Then for the Russians to protect a tiny land border they have with NK too
