Npower rant

I had npower change my meter from an Economy 7 to a single rate after I moved in, as we have no storage heaters... they still haven't updated my account to reflect the new meter type.

The meter was changed on July 1st!

Extra Energy, we only just found out we get billed twice a year (every six months) so you have no idea if you're in credit or over.

You basically have to calculate it yourself online using something like this http://www.ukpower.co.uk/tools/smart_meter_calculator .

But i was shocked because they apparently don't have the infrastructure to calc your monthly bill regardless of how many times you give meter readings.

We pay DD £87 pcm for a large three bed semi (was four bed but combined two rooms), we spend £39 on elec & £100 on gas, this is based on my own meter readings & calculation, but i hate to way it says "in credit [insert monthx£87]" when i know come a few months it wont cover it, but will of course be leveled out in the summer months.

Wouldn't have joined them if i knew about their complete lack of billing per month.

Just submitted my final meter readings to E-ON. The email said they will pass the info on to nPower who will submit the final bill. Fingers crossed I get no more issues! DD is £40 with E-ON. nPower wanted me to up it to £100. No chance! Never hardley got gas or electric on really! I also have 17x 200 watt solar panels!

What was that app we used to send snippets of sound bytes to one another on?

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I'll add to this.

Right... I have had it upto my neck with nPower but before I type my rant I am not aiming this at the varying people I have talked to on the phone as they have been excellent. It is basically down to the people who do account investigations in 'back office'.

In March 2014 I had a gas prepayment meter installed due to my ex not paying the gas direct debits and it made in debt with them. It was programmed to take £10 per week off the debt when I topped up using the gas card every week. Great, it got me all organised and kept on top of usage and payments etc. Then in the summer I got a letter saying I owe £1900 (ish) and they would get the heavies round if it's not paid in 14 days etc etc. I called told them im on PP meter etc. Ok it was sorted.

Later in the year another letter I owe £900 ish called them back asking how its dropped 1k when only a few hundred has been taken off the debt via the meter. Account got put under investigation................. Ok I can't be bothered to go through it all so here is a rough breakdown on events leading up to today. In order but spread out the time from march 2014 to december 2016

Ok investigation
Letter after investigation saying I owe 1400
Called them
Investigation
Letter 900 quid owed
called them
Investig....
Letter 750 owed
called them AGAIN
Inves...
Letter Im in credit 480 smackers
CALLED AGAIN
Inve..
letter 500 odd owed
called them
I went on holiday for a week I stuck £30 on 10 for debt and 20 for gas before I went just to cover the standing charges and make sure we have credit for when we get home.
Check meter and its £3 something
Called them they had no idea why. (heating was off during out holiday only programmed to come on if is drops to 5oc in the house, never dropped to that EVER). I was told the debt should have been paid off by now even if it was a 1900 or 1600 debt
Inv.. due to be resolved 6th Jan 2017
topped up £100 (10 for debt and 90 for gas for the 4 week period (old house crap insulation) and I budgeted for £20 per week after that just to get us in front for the Jan/feb cold snap and also to pay 10 quid per week debt
Meter took off £70 for debt and left me with 30 gas for 4 weeks (not including the extra 30 I would put on for gas every friday till next pay day
Called them expressing my anger as I now have no surplus funds to add extra to keep us with gas. (extra 60 taken off when I stuck the 100 on) nothing they can do.
topped up 10 quid 7 came off for debt
called them other day
they told me to top up £1 so the card can get a message to change the meter back to 10 a week.
Didnt work
called them tonight
told me same thing
Topped up a squid
no message added to card took 70p for debt
called back about 30 mins ago
told to top up again with a code to give to vendor.

Is talking to ombudsman worth it right now?????

Its upsetting my wife, myself worried Ill run out of gas. I have a nearly 2 year old we need warmth and means to cook. It crap.

I am £5 in emergency credit probably lats till tomorrow afternoon as its bloody cold outside tonight. If this code thing doesnt work in the morning I will have no heating untill I find some money. even them whatever I stick on it it will take 70% off for debt until this code/message it received by the card.

Npower are useless. I have never known a company that cant communicate, or even help out more to make sure people dont suffer. yes I got into debt, not directly myself but still my problem for not trusting or checking the ex was paying the bill or not. Still, can't they help?? I asked if they could add £50 to my card to just to see us through till payday but they can't.. It's ridiculous.

Im with OvO for electric and talked to them about it a bit ago and they wanted to help if they could but the can't obviously as I am not with them on gas YET.... I cant even get npower to take my debt off and set up a payment play direct debit as its under investigation. If they did that I would only top up what I know I need and not worry sick over it every week. The debt would be coming out my bank every month till it clears and it would not be an issue..

I am sat here panicking like a mad man..:(

Rant over. sorry if its bored you.

Definitely get on to the ombudsman. Make sure you have written records of how.much you've paid. How much they've taken. How much you think you owe or are owed. If you have Facebook or twitter I recommend hammering them through there.

I have letters from March '14 and according to npower 'a note as long as my arm' (every time I call its added to a note system and all info is added etc so EVERYONE should know everything about my account, debt, calls, voice chats etc))

According to my online statement of credits, debts payments etc I added it up and the 'original' 1.9k debt (it was NEVER this much) would have been paid off either this time lats year or very early this year.,.

OK, well keep them and organise them. It'll help the ombudsman. Also as I say - get on social media. We had issues 2 years ago that were only solved because we made a very public stink.
Also if you don't believe you owed 1900 find proof for that too. Work on getting back every single penny that you're owed.

My experience with the ombudsmen is they were even more useless than NPower. Took them 4 weeks to reply asking for the details I already provided. I replied with what they wanted, 6 weeks later same copy paste response.

Thankfully I got somewhere with NPower via facebook and they wrote off a large portion of debt due to the guidelines for back billing anything over 12 months old (they recalculated my bill for a 3 year period about 9 times in a 1 year period with massive deviations each time, my argument was simple "tell me how much I actually owe and I will pay it now"). That might be your go to with them due to them being unable to give you an actual debt amount. Keep in mind they have been fined over their shoddy historical practice of back billing.

Back billing

Sadly, however despite this when they recalculate your bill for the last 12 months they are also ignoring any payments made prior to 12 months, so they assume the payment you made covered the bill which they were incapable of working out.

Cheers for that Itchytrigg. Worth copying my post here on the Npower face book page?? with it being edited of course to get rid of the beginning bit and ad a few more bits directed at them .??

The thing is I know I was in debt.. not the 1900 they first told me. I know that for sure unless the tariff went silly. Like REALLY silly. I think I will copy my post on here to the face book page and see where it gets me.

I was over charged just under £650 by n power two years ago because of a faulty gas meter. Still trying to get my money back now, Joke of s company

Was it actually a faulty meter or just Npower being unable to correctly bill the meter? (IIRC they had major issues with their system being unable to do the calculation to convert the units on older gas meters).

Npower are just a bunch of crooks!
I was with them up until 2 years ago.
They still owe me £45 but every time I rang up I was given the usual bs run around.
I gave up in the end.
I seriously do hope that they go under.

A little shout out for Octopus Energy too. We moved to them from Eon around a year or so ago and they've been fantastic. Normally submit meter readings every couple of months.

Octopus look pretty decent from what I've seen. Pretty competitive tariffs too from the looks of it.

Npower are wretched, feel sorry for anyone with them. Ofgem need to seriously sort them out, fining them over and over again clearly isn't having the desired effect.

Talking of ofgem, I can't wait to see what they find on Economy Energy and E. 2 of the most appalling con artists on the market.

ecotricity are just as bad

with them over 4 years, not once did i see an agent. wanted to change provider, got a final bill ( was paying dd ) based on agents readings. the bill was over £900. i said i wanted the meter checked to which they said they wouldn't do as i was no longer with them

challenged it, said i wanted dates and times of the readings to which they conceded hadn't actually been done but i'd still used the amount to which i said they should've put my estimated dd up blah blah blah a lot of back and forth emails and phone calls final bill was settled at just under £300
