Npower rant

SSE are pretty good. You can supply meter readings on line and if you have a slight deficit make an extra payment which avoids constant up and down of the DD.

I wouldn't touch NPower with a bargepole after the hassle a few years ago when my father died. He had changed providers but they were still trying to bill him, in the end I just ignored the redirected mail and it eventually stopped.

No company is perfect. Yes some have a higher complaint rate than others, but they generally have much higher volumes of customers. I work for the ombudsman and investigate energy companies all day long and I've investigated every single company mentioned in this thread so far.

GB Energy Supply are great as we...... and they're gone.

The smaller ones ruin the risk of going under, but tend to have better customer service. The big ones are more expensive, treat complaints and issues appallingly but are more stable.

Try and get off the pre-payment **** as soon as you can though if possible. Those things eat money.

Was in credit by 500 as they kept billing me after closing the account. The electric was closed, but not the gas (why) took months to get the refund. Each time they would say it would be sorted in a month, each month, nothing. Gf had same with them. Never again

We are with npower. Didnt get a bill for 18 months and when we queried this we were told they were having issues with their systems. They continued to take £125 a month by direct debit. Anyway, we had a big fat envelope through that contianed all of our previous billing info. At one point we were £1300 in credit and they were using that to pay our bills. By the time we got the bills through the credit had reduced to £400. So I called and asked for it back. The other thing was that the bills that came through said our new monthly payment was now £65. Ok, good result then!

3 months later we get another letter saying we are £125 in debt and that our new monthly payment is going ro be £112!!

We have just put through a switch request as we have had enough of npower. Total incompetence. They really need their arses handing to them by the regulator as taking the money and running whilst providing such shoddy service surely cant be legal?

npower stitched us up this year too, our fix on our previous provider came to an end so we looked to switch, npower had the best deal supposedly based on our last years usage so we switched to them, within a month we had the letter saying the monthly DD was going up to higher than what our previous provider was saying the bill was going up to.

complete waste of time and clearly the quoted amount was not based on our actual previous usage and just a fictitious figure just to get us to switch.

I've been waiting for Scottish power to set me up since July, still waiting.... I'll put a complaint in next week, while they're keeping us in limbo I've no way of scouting around for the better deals and providers, disgrace of a company.

Goodie - I had the exact same issue. Moved into a new build, existing supplier was Scottish Power which the home builder said they'd move my account over into my name. Scottish Power I had to chase repeatedly and in the end it took them about 6 months to set up an account.

When they finally did say my account was setup, I asked to be put on the March Fix tarriff (which was the live tariff when I moved in) and was much cheaper than the September fix tariff which was the only one available.

They told me that wasn't possible, so I pointed out to them I signed up in March - it's hardly my problem they couldn't set my account up, and if they'd informed me they wouldn't be honoring the pricing I would never have gone through their switching procedure. I told them not to bother setting my account up - they could send me a final bill based on May's pricing - I would refuse to pay anything more taking it to the ombudsman if necessary and would be switching supplier immediately.

Suddenly they offered a nice one off goodwill payment which i got them to increase further :)

A quick question guys.

Having had enough I suggested to my wife about calling npower and cancelling my account with them like people do when they move house and sign up to OvO or whoever. The debt then would have to be placed under a payment plan surely and I would get my gas from OvO etc. Would this work or not?

Edit: I have spoke to them again this morning about requesting my debt is taken of the meter and for a payment plan to be set up and have a credit meter installed but they said it cant be done as my account is under investigation. The lady said once the investigation is done (6thJan) they will see what they can do. Surely they can't stop me from leaving them can they and for me to go elsewhere?

My house was powered by nPower when I bought it. I switched to British Gas when I moved in which took just over 2 weeks. I was still getting bills from nPower 18 months later.
Make sure if you complain you are actually making a formal complaint. They tried that one with me. You have to have made a "formal" complaint and given them 2 months (I think it was?) to sort it before you go to the Ombudsman.

Also had numerous billing problems with Npower which never made sense (massive arrears to £500 credit in one month and back again). Gave accurate meter readings and have visits to our flat to check the meter and never got anything close to accurate - suggested our monthly DD go up to £135 or so for a 1 bed flat, everything switched off bar the minimum and both of us working 14+ hours a day so I finally swicthed.

Been with Ovo for two years and they have been faultless and our new monthly DD for both is £65 for a 4 bedroom house rather than a flat and all estimated readings have been extremely accurate so their software definitely works it out better than whatever is used at Npower.

Funny how you posted this, I had the same issue. I hadn't been correctly billed for over 18 months, in fact I hadn't got a bill.

Npower finally sent me what they called an adjusted bill covering the near on two years of missed billing to then write it off??

Then sent me a bill for £900 after missing yet another years worth of billing? I never knew what I'd been billed for, but to be honest, £900 for nearly three years gas /electric on a three bed house, well I paid the bill and moved on.

Really is a strange company. I heard they attempted to migrate to a newer electronic billing system, I guess that was a bit of a failure. No idea, but they are incompetent when it comes to billing.

We've been with npower for last year and a half and until reading this thread I figured everything was fine. Now I might have to double check!

Is the debt down to their mistake?
