Number plates for cyclists...

Yeah exactly. you need to double road widths and separate cars and bikes for starters, thats not happening in big cities with medieval layouts without cropping some major real estate.
They need to get some Bulldozers from city skylines and go to town...

As both a cyclist and driver, in principle I'm all for registrations for cyclists - I certainly would have no hesitation displaying one if required to do so, but there are practical considerations (e.g. do kids bikes need a registration?, where are you going to display a plate which is big enough to be easily visible, but not get in the way/cause significant wind resistance?)

Insurance is a bit more of a grey area - in a car obviously you can easily cause tens of thousands worth of damage, not so much with a bike (although certainly possible if you crash into someone's Ferrari). I guess you take the risk of being sued!

Sorry but this is just nonsense... a cyclist on a pushbike is still more than capable of killing a pedestrian in a collision if a bit of "bad luck" joins in, so to try and act like "but, but, it's a cyclist, what harm can they do?" is just laughable.

I have tried to explain but here goes again:

On my 250 watt 15.5mph eBike I don't need MOT, Insurance, a Reg plate or to pay any tax (although I wouldn't have to pay under VED rules) and I can ride on cycle lanes, paths etc which are 80% of my commute.
If I rode a 1000 watt eBike I should have MOT, Insurance and a Reg plate and won't be able to ride on cycle lanes, paths etc.
I like going at 15mph or 24mph if I pedal harder and not be tied down.
Yes I totally understand.
I commute on a cycle, I ride a motorcycle and I drive a car and a van for work on occasion.
I’ve also ridden horses on the road.
I understand it better than most infact.

Been to Paris lately? That used to by traffic and cycling hell, it’s much closer to Amsterdam these days. As a result traffic has been massively reduced and cycling safety has been massively improved.

i have actually lol.
It did seem empty of cars except around Av. des Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe.
I assume they did it by simply banning cars or pricing them out of reality like in the London congestion zone?
all the back streets seemed to be 1 way only. We did spend a whole day walking and you're right traffic never really crossed my mind, unlike in London....

Cyclists shouldn't be above the law, fair enough. Suggesting they can be forced to register themselves as a cyclist and get insured is just typical Daily Mail chug bait.

Plus, they're focused on the speeding? Come on, it's riding two and three abreast that should be prosecuted.

Why do all the warning signs that used to say "Cycle Race" that people tie to trees along the main roads, now say "Cycle Event", whilst old doderers still click stop watches as the number clad cyclists pass their check points?

cycle race implies it's a competition. competitions have to have winners and losers. we live in an age where folk can't accept being a loser at something. so they call it an event. losers. :p

I thought cyclists were already subject to speed limits; I've learned something new.

I believe they are, it's just that the Police won't prosecute a cyclist who momentarily exceeds a speed limit while going down a hill because that would be pointless and look ridiculous. The posted speed limit applies to all vehicles driving down that road (unless there is a lower maximum speed limit set for particular vehicles, like trucks/caravans/etc on motorways). It doesn't matter if they are propelled by an internal combustion engine, electric motor, human peddle power or a horse. After all, cyclists still have to obey the direction of traffic on one-way streets and stop at red traffic lights etc so why would they be exempt from the posted speed limit? I suspect Grant Shapps is talking out of his arse as usual.

Govt loves passing laws that'll never get enforced police won't even bother
Almost like they are trying to distract from some horrible news that was released today, regarding the state of the economy... lets get everyone whipped up into a frenzy over a non-issue, that will never see the light of day. Anything to hopefully stop people talking about how difficult things will be, for a lot of people come winter.

A mate who works at a bank has given up riding his bike to work.

Kept losing his balance didn't he.

Whilst I fully appreciate the "we can't have a loser" mentality, I am not so sure it's not an insurance scam, as racing on the public highway, and I THINK, timed trials, are illegal. Around here the only issue people seem to have with cyclists is those participating in these events, who seem oblivious of all around as they push themselves to near heart attack levels to pedal as hard and as long as possible. I am not sure the Old Bill would be as blind eyed to a "Car Event" with timekeepers along the route...

Personally cyclists don't bother me, I see about 1 a day on average, whatever turns you on.

Here's a SexyGreyFox story for you:

One of my Son In Laws drives artics etc for a living and earlier this year joined a new firm who told him he had to take a cycling proficiency test :)
He did the test around 2 months ago along with a load of other HGV drivers and when he visited he said I had balls of steel and he had a new respect for me.
In the morning they went through training in the depot with HGVs passing them and he said they all poo'd themselves.
In the afternoon they were given a route that took in 3 sets of traffic lights where they went straight over, left and right and had to keep to the rules of the road.
When they got back all 10 were angry with two of them having altercations with car drivers and my SIL said he'll never get on a bike again.
He could also understand why cyclists went through red traffic lights to get out of the way and why they sometimes go on pavements.

No they aren’t. Speed limits only apply to motorised vehicles under rule 124 in the Highway Code and they are a “must” bicycles are not included

Yes, and it also says I should get 6 points on my licence if I pay by mobile at the McDs drive through.

F the highway code, 2 abreast is just attention seeking at best.

Cool. Petition for those 10 cyclists to be forced to cycle single file taking up 20m+ of the road and still riding in the safe area in the road. You will never be able to get past them safely then...

Perhaps if you thought about why they do it instead of thinking that they want attention (I mean come on) then you might have realised why its preferable when cyclists are in a group.

The main thing that causes traffic is...cars.

My thoughts as a car driver, biker and cyclist :-

1) Motorised/Powered vehicles like e-bikes and e-scooters (if ever made road legal) should be registered and insured. Plus there should be strict speed/power limits on them. If they're exceeded they should be subject to the same regulations, licensing as cars and motorbikes.

2) Police need to actually make an effort to crack down and prosecute those caught breaking the law by riding on pavements (whether pedal or e-bikes) or flouting speed/power retrictions.

3) Pedal bikes shouldn't be subject to the same regulations/restrictions as electrically powered vehicles like ebikes, escooters, etc.

To my mind point 2 is the biggest problem. I've never seen police make any effort to stop those who are clearly breaking the law by riding on pavements. Likewise I've never seen anyone riding an e-scooter on the road, which is currently illegal, stopped by the police. Plus I've been overtaken at 30-40mph by pedal ebikes which are clearly unrestricted.
That's good point you making.
