Number plates for cyclists...

is there even a minimum age for cycling on the road just now??

it's obv nonsense but if anything it would have to be like the 'grandfather rights' for people who passed their car test pre 1997 - ie they could/can drive 7.5t vehicles/tow trailers even after it changed in '97 - can't take away what you already have

sooo..if there's no min age for cycling on the road just now then a 'cycling license' :o could only apply to people born after whatever date it (the new rules/number plates :P)
starts?? :p

they should just remove the power limit from electric assisted bikes and give them licenses like in EU

let's face it most commuter bikes will be electric at some point

The families cycling fast A roads (even in lower limits) can be scary sometimes - I've more than once come around a bend (with high hedges, etc.) to find something along the lines of one instance of mum with baby in a carrier, 2x kids then dad at the front all tucked into the side with drab coloured clothing and had minimal time to react. When you get lorries thumping through ignoring the speed limit, etc. that is a frighting situation.

Looks like we are getting numberplates for cyclists after all then.
it will no doubt end up costing a ridiculous sum of money that makes no sense, also won't be any police around to do anything about it anyway.

you could probably take the plates off your car and likely not see a police car for weeks or months.

They got no chance of catching a cyclist anyway unless they are on police bikes which probably isn;'t a thing outside of London because I've never seen one

Talking about cyclists busting through red lights, I saw 2 cars do just that yesterday evening cycling on my way back from work. The second car jumped a red light at a 3 way junction while I was turning right and missed my front wheel by a few feet. Suffice to say that footage was uploaded onto the Police site so they will be a getting a letter in the not too distant future.

I do support any calls to make cyclists much more responsible..

Red light jumping, speeding, cycling on pavements, causing an undue roadblock to faster vehicles..

i.e. like cars, they have to be enforced to ride responsibly for the next level down of vulnerable road user, the pedestrian.

I find the new rules as someone trying to be responsible to cyclists have just made it feel less safe... To be responsible you have to give much more than 2M (>30mph), so I do, an hug the right hand curb, this means longer overtakes and/or much less overtaking opportunities, but so be it, so I don't get why the same campaigning cyclists are against having some focus on their responsibilities..

Good on you, this is how it should be, and this is why I would support registration of cycles, then dashcams of cyclists going through red lights etc and being identifiable would be great, send those in and get them prosecuted to. This is only proper and fair.

Every morning I walk to work, I get about 40% of cyclists not just jumping a red light, but jumping on the pavement, going around a blind corner (it's a cross roads) to bypass the red light, then jump back on the road.. We've had several people hit by cyclists at that point and absolutely nothing done..
I had several weeks of physio after some git was cycling on the pavement past me, his rucksack (flailing around) hit me in the back (the corner of the bag) this bruised the muscle fibres, they knitted together and I was in a lot of pain for weeks, and the physio was a nightmare not to mention it cost me £500+

all cars should be painted in neon colours as to improve visibility and prevent accidents
also limit them to the max speed permitted on a motorway in this country.

repeated driver tests on a yearly basis and monthly drug tests

Unfortunately there are some idiot cyclists around, but no where near as many as their are idiot drivers. Suffice to say that cyclist that ran a red light and wacked you with his bag, probably runs red lights in his car also, eventually he or she will get caught, the issue is that if they do it in a car and hit someone, that person has a far greater chance of not surviving it. I think in all instances of a cyclist hitting a pedestrian, the pedestrian has either died or been seriously injured as a result of hitting their head on the pavement or road. They absolutely should be accountable and in most situations specially in build up areas, they almost always are due to the prevalence of CCTV with big brother always watching. Like the young lad who hit that elderly lady not too long ago, he wasn't caught because of a number plate or registration, it was good old fashioned CCTV and detective work. The former would have just made the process a little faster.

I see it every day I'm driving, infinitely more cars do it

I'd be more interested in number plates for electric scooters tbh.
1. The riders seem to pull much more dangerous stunts than cyclists.
2. It would help with the appalling visibility from behind (especially in the dark, those tiny little dull red lights at ground level are seriously rubbish for making them visible, and not all of them even have those lights).
