Nurse arrested for murdering babies

Can anybody make sense of this contradiction ?

"He had very unusual patching of his skin, which I have never seen before.
"The patches were blue, purple, red and white. I've never seen it before or since. It didn't come and go - it came and then he went into cardiac arrest."
Dr Harkness said the "abnormal" patches were "all over" Child A's body and he had only ever seen it in one other child.
Does he mean it was the first time he had seen it and since seeing it he has only seen a further single time

But then it doesn't explain his comment that he's never seen it since or before, so he's either only ever seen it once or he's seen it twice as the 3 statement suggests

It makes no sense at all. It's either poorly transcribed or he's talking rubbish!

Yes, the only time he's seen it is with 2 babies she killed and 1 baby she tried to kill:

“There was very unusual patchiness on his skin which I had not seen before. There were patches of blue-purple colour, patches of red and of white that didn’t fit. This was bright red patches . . . that means you have blood going round.” He said they were all over the body and were “there from shortly after the event started”. He continued: “It didn’t come and go. It came. It was there. He had a cardiac arrest. Unfortunately I have seen lots of babies who have had the pattern that fits with death or dying and I have not seen these.”

He said the only other time he had witnessed a similar skin colouring and pattern was in an incident involving another set of twins, Child E and F, only one of whom survived after being allegedly attacked by Letby.

That's not what that quote says. In the one posted he said he'd never seen it before or since. Then it goes on to say he's seen it on another occasion.

It beggars belief that someone would devote so many years of their life to becoming a nurse, having to undertake countless hours of training and qualifications, costing themselves thousands in debt only to do turn around and think this is a rationale thing to do.

Maybe I just don't understand how people can throw away their life on a whim but there must be something fundamentally wrong in these sorts of cases. Same principle with doctors that get caught prescribing their own medication or inappropriately exposing themselves, albeit in a less extreme example.

Another one where doctors have seen something mega suspicious and done nothing.

In most cases where a child is murdered by their parents that child has multiple contacts with healthcare services before their death. Nothing new here sadly.

How?!

"However, while Logan was in hospital a further assessment was made and a paediatric doctor took 31 images of other "significant" injuries which included bruising to his forehead, ears, cheeks, arm and a carpet bruise on his chin."

"The paediatric consultant did not consider Logan to be a child "who had sustained a non-accidental injury" and there was no evidence that information about the injuries was shared with agencies outside the health board."

Who accidentally bruises their ears?! Not one, both! 31 separate injuries, not just a couple of bruised shins and a scuffed knee.

And yet I once knew a parent who's child was taken away after a single incident - she fell down the stairs and sustained multiple bruising. I have always found the issue with social services is they are enthusiastic but not professional or consistent. It largely came down to their relationship with the parents rather than the facts.

I'm the person who has to get records & images for the Police and a couple of months ago I sent 21 Clinical Photography images on a two year old child.
Of course the images weren't very nice but apparently the child is very accident prone and nothing came of it.
When I think back to my youngest daughter she was always covered in bruises, we always laugh she had a death wish.

Ear injuries are high risk you're right but not everyone is aware of that (I know a recent case where an ear injury wasn't treated appropriately). Sounds like he had a child protection examination and strategy meeting which is standard practice, it wasn't as if he was just kicked out of A&E by someone inexperienced.

If you look at all the high profile child murders many of them have numerous presentations to A&E and Paeds before dying. It's a very common theme.

Your question about how the children aren't protected is a difficult one. I imagine some people find it hard to believe a child could be injured by their parents so are swayed to call it accidental, many times you just can't be certain and Social Care refuse to act, sadly I suspect other times it's potentially laziness because of how much work goes into trying to remove a child, other times it's missed or not managed via appropriate pathways.

I've seen all sorts over the years, both brilliant responses to child injury and other times utter incompetence.

The biggest challenge is regarding thresholds for removing children. To stop all children dying you're going to take a boatload of kids off their parents that are innocent and their injuries accidental. So many children fall into the "could be/might be non-accidental injury".

Bruised ears?! I've only seen them in rugby injuries and someone who has been beaten about the head.
Add that in to the rest and surely every alarm bell going should be ringing.
