NVIDIA 4000 Series

Gotcha. Colour me very disappointed.

Yeah, every piece of information makes this worse and worse.

This launch needed to come with a big price cut to be good value, not a 2x price jump.

You can see that card was supposed to be a 4070.

Even the clock speeds and 285W TDP were spot on.

Freaking disgraceful.

thinking abt it a full upgrade path this gen is going to be prohibitively expensive, x670 motherboards too have been priced a bit out of range, the thing is i dont ascribe high value to motherboards theyre just supposed to glue other components together, and i believe thats how most enthusiasts perceive motherboards

From le Reddit

Digital Foundry has a real, actual 4090 that they're testing out. They put out a teaser video that has enough information to figure out that like for like (Both with DLSS 2) , the 4090 is only about 1.5-1.6x faster than 3090Ti !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyGWFI1cuZQ

Data point 1: DLSS3 is 389%, while DLSS3 is 255.4% (Both 4090) This means DLSS 2 is 0.656x of DLSS 3. Note, the baseline is 4090 with DLSS off.

Data point 2: DLSS2 3090Ti is 100%, while DLSS 3 4090 is 235.8%. Multiplying by 0.66x (the difference b/w DLSS 2 & 3, we get 154%, which is the true performance uplift vs 3090Ti.

Needless to say, super disappointing and well below what leatherJacketMan claimed (2x - 4x uplift).

And someone else's calculations from Reddit:

Back of the envelope calculation on this video, 4090 is 62.8% faster than 3090 Ti

Key points

At around 2:05 - Cyberpunk 2077 with a 12900K and 4090, Native 4k vs 4k DLSS2 vs 4K DLSS3 - DLSS2 is 246.9% framerate of native, and DLSS3 is 367.1% framerate of native. That implies DLSS 3 is a 48.7% uplift off of DLSS 2

At around 2:20 - Cyberpunk 2077 with a 12900k, 3090 Ti, and 4k DLSS2 vs 12900k, 4090, 4k DLSS3 - 4090 DLSS 3 is 242% framerate of 3090 Ti DLSS 2

If we assumed a hypothetical 3090 Ti DLSS3 would run 48% better (from the first comparison above), that would mean the comparison between 4090 DLSS 3 is 162.8% framerate of the hypothetical 3090 Ti DLSS3

Caveat: Digital Foundry is running RT on, so this improvement includes improvements to RT cores. Likely lower uplift with pure raster

All those 4090s are HUGE. I haven't seen any 4 slots variants, but the height of the cards is insane. With more performance comes more power (+cooling). Didn't see any data on the rendering performance, let alone any specific FP16, FP32 performance, but for creatives on 3090s, no burning reason to change.

Toyed with the idea of replacing my 2080 with a 4090, the power should be OK, but could not conceivably fit any of those 4090s in my case.

Surprised by the 4080 prices, especially the 4080 16GB, ouch!

It's way worse than that. The thing is RT at 4K (in demanding games) hits all GPUs like a truck, so performance gains can appear disproportional compared to lower resolutions, which is what you'd get with DLSS/FSR and it's how you'd actually play the game. They've not shown any real DLSS 2 comparisons with RT for Ampere vs Lovelace.

Remember, if they're showing Cyberpunk with 4090 running <30fps then that means a 3090 is in like low 20s at best, so it's easy to have huge, fake, jumps.
