I said the same thing about the last generation until the COVID GPU shortage hit and the only thing I could buy was literally a 3090. The choice was either a) no gaming or b) pay £1400. Upon reflection the choice was pretty damn easy because not being able to enjoy gaming during lockdown was pretty damn frustrating even taking into account my other hobbies. PC gaming scratches an itch that nothing else can replace.I think we need a which one are you buying thread poll with the options
3080 12GB
3080 16GB
4090
None as I have functioning brain cells and a conscience
However the RTX4090 is an even tougher sell than the 3090, with it being a 20-30% price hike and ideally needing a new ATX 3.0 PSU which also costs around £150+. I will be interested to see what the prices are like in my non-EU country where PC hardware is usually a bit cheaper than elsewhere.
Still, I guess if you take the re-sale value into account then if you spend £1600 on a GPU at the beginning of a launch and can sell it for £600-£800 2 years later then it means it has cost £400-£500 per year of gaming over the course of the generation which isn't the worst value for a hobby you enjoy.
