NVIDIA 4000 Series

4080 will need to be at *least* 30% faster than a 3080 for me to upgrade (hopefully more like 40-50% with RT on). If its only small upgrade like 15% and costs more + takes more electricity I will skip. 3080 at stock 330w was already too much for my liking, I have it running at around 250-270w undervolted.

Hope its not a repeat of the 2000 series where we get cards that are barely faster than the previous gen but cost more - but giving the mining and stock situation I can see it happening again.

I remember buying the 2080ti for £900 on discount and thinking that’s a lot for a GPU and now I won’t even bat an eyelid if the 4090 is 2.5k on release!

how much was the 2080ti ? I got the 3080FE for £649 with nvidia FE drops

Yep, you and the other handful of folks in countries where such things exist. I paid £900 for my 2080Ti. Meanwhile on the open market the 3070, which is almost at 2080Ti level, has only just dropped under 2080Ti prices, a year and a half after the 3 series launch. And on the 3080 is still retailing at twice or more of the ‘RRP’.

The 3000 series has offered the worst price/performance ever. The demand and price escalation has been insane. For the I hope the next series isn’t a repeat of this one or I may be sticking with my current card for a decade.

There's nothing that a 3080/3080ti/3090 can't play well at 4k. 4000 series dead on arrival if it doesn't provide a true increase in performance at each respective price point.

I have zero hype for the 4000 series after the whole 3000 series debacle, I was hoping to upgrade from my 2070S to a 3080 but no way that is happening with these prices still in play :(

I used to look forward to the buzz of new GPUs launching too.

The marketing department have succeeded.
Yep, seen a few people say similar things. Giving price hints to the companies again.

Hoping the next cards are a decent 30-40% bump per tier, don't care about the 4090 or whatever, it will probably be a silly price again with only the vram increase and not performance going for it anyway. Hopefully the 4080 is still close with a decent increase in vram so people won't have anything to complain about.

I'll be skipping the 4000 series, sounds like a real power hog and my 3090 is bad enough in that regard. The 3090 eats anything I throw at it right now and the 24GB ram will be more than adequate for the foreseeable future.

I've also found since I did my first ever custom loop that I just don't want to take things out and tinker anymore because it's such a hassle, so the ~£800 cost of the loop looks like it will save me money in the long run.

I'll be going with FE route again paid £649 for 3080fe , if AIB are over priced on release day

Just glad have FE option , maybe intel and AMD will also do UK drops this time

I am most excited to see what 4000 series offers for the low power cards ~6 months after the main power-houses are released. As a SFF case lover, the idea of getting 3080 performance out of a small card (ideally 220W or less) in maybe 12-18 months ….. that would cause me to open my wallet in seconds.

450+ Watts. I'm struggling to imagine buying something like that. 800W just feels insane. That would put the entire PC at about 1KW - one of the most power intensive objects in the house. Kettle, 2.5KW. Hoover, 2KW.

Am I the only one looking at this thinking "That's insane. You are joking, right??"?

With the cost of electricity getting out of control, running costs will be a HUGE thinking element this time around for people. Wheras before people, and lets be honest here, didn't care about running costs, they just wanted the fastest GPU they could get.

Next gen, with the cost of leccy going mental, you'll need to consider running costs for a 500, 600, 700W card and if it'll be adding a signifiant amount on your monthly leccy bills, AFTER you buy the card.

Buying the card to start with will be brutal to your bank account, then adding potential of £200+ a year in additional leccy costs too, that'll be in peoples thinking for the first time that I can ever remember.

Exactly what I was thinking as the power costs and cost of living will only get worse after April.

It would be crazy for Nvidia to do the FE mistake again. They lost so much profit.

I'm not even sure that there's a modern gen card that runs on just pci-e power. Something that uses modern tech for power efficiency first, display second.

Personally I wouldn't mind if electricity and oil wasn't going through the roof.
