NVIDIA 4000 Series

anyone else needed to do a firmware update to the 4090 because of the bug where you just have a black screen during boot. No show for bios.
I try using the nvidia firmware tool but it just doesn't seem to do anything. everything goes black while its "updating" but I've left it for like an hour and nothing happens. I can escape out of it fine but I just want it updated

I had to squeeze in a second GPU to successfully flash it

99.999% of people mamaged to use both types with no issue & didnt need neanderthal force.
100% managed to plug in the PCIe side without catastrophic failure.

Since no amount of force will result in a click, the Neanderthal level of force was the result of the many times I read "If it didn't click, it's not locked." and such. I wanted to see if people were just being dense / weak, or if the connector was ****.

Well, the 12VHPWR side of my adapter provides no useful feedback to indicate that it's locked. The PCIe connectors DO. The PCIe connectors work as expected. The 12VHPWR connector does NOT work as expected.

Knowing that the 12VHPWR adapter has an issue where some click and some don't is a useful piece of information for the community. -Particularly since the 12VHPWR connector has such a catastrophic mode of failure.

Pretending that this thing always works as it should is counterproductive.

steve also said its hard to tell when inb properly as his didnt make a sound and you had to apply a **** load of force to be sure, my recent one went straight in same as the old style connectors
Indeed, flaws in the design of the cable make it easier to screw it up.

It’s funny because despite that there’s still hysterical people on a Asus Facebook forum I’m a part of who won’t touch their cards until they get an alternative to the Nvidia adaptor and think that if they take the risk their computer will burn down and take their house and family with it. I’m not even exaggerating and that was something I read and I had to reply that perhaps he needed therapy rather than a replacement adaptor lol.
People are taking it too far, I hope they saw the Gamers Nexus video. With the wiggle test and plugging the adaptor into the card before putting it in the motherboard it's very difficult to get it wrong.

I will say though that it shouldn't have required as much force to seat correctly and it should also produce a much more audible click when connected. Therefore the designers of these cables do share in the blame. I heard that they are redesigning it by shortening the sense pins so it won't power on if not fully inserted which would be a good idea, perhaps with a flashing light to tell the user what's wrong.

Anyone know if Colourful is a reputable brand? It's the cheapest brand avaliable in NZ but cant find much online for it..

Can either grab this one tomorrow or I wait a week for boxing day sales and hope the Gigabyte comes down around this price.

They are big in Asia, I believe they are reputable but have no personal experience with them.

lol what, who can be expected to just have a second GPU laying about ahaha

It shouldn’t technically need it from their description, but when I tried I just got a permanent black screen.

Taking an old 10 series card out of my CNC PC and squeezing that just underneath the 4090 was the only way I could get the update program to run properly. No idea why it works for some and not for others.

I guess it’s a good argument for always having some form of built in GPU to the CPU, at least for display purposes for troubleshooting with discrete GPUs.

No, mine does not click, so I prob have the less good one. I just pushed it in with a normal amount of force and checked there was no gap. Have had zero issues.

I'll say it again, if you can't insert a cable & check it's inserted, maybe a £1700 GPU is not for you.

Special tool.

Yeah thats exactly whats happening with me.
I have a 12900k, I guess I could use the motherboard display out to see whats happening

I used it and it updated in a few minutes, 5 tops.

Its fairly idiot proof if I remember rightly. You just type "y" and it does its thing. You've checked the firmware version in GPU-Z and it needs updating? Mine that is updated is 95.02.20.00.01

It is idiot proof, but despite that it doesn’t always seem to work with the GPU in use… as you say there’s not really any room to mess things up but pressing “y” with my 4090 alone simply resulted in a black screen.

It was only when using a second GPU that the update would actually successfully run when entering “y”.
