NVIDIA 4000 Series

I wish more reviewers would test indie/smaller games as it's all very well them testing the triple a titles but some titles like valheim, 7 days to die, grounded are very popular and can be demanding too e.g. I fully expected valheim to be better on amd since vulkan api but seems not (not really just looking at 40xx/rdna 3 level of perf. here either but all round):
^^This many times over!

While AAA title testing is great for baseline performance, it's not always reflective of smaller indie titles even on powerful hardware. Case in point, a friend of mine plays a lot of Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic. They upgraded their 1080ti to a 6800XT Red Devil and the fps were essentially no better than the existing card and in some cases the overall experience was worse. After a lot of troubleshooting of a fresh stripped back OS install, different drivers, talking with the devs etc. the conclusion was it just didn't run as well on the AMD card at the time. The Red Devil got returned and they got a 3070 instead. That performed as expected within the game and was a reasonable uplift.

I've a 1000+ Steam games and the majority of time it'll be an indie title i'm playing rather than a AAA title. So while it's unrealistic for reviewers to test a plethora of indie titles, it'd be great if they could add some of the more popular titles into their mix.

Yeah there are definitely a few of them titles that just don't run well on amd compared to nvidia, would be good to know why this is, I presume a bit of the following:

- amd not optimising drivers as well for smaller/indie games
- indie developers not using amd gpus so can't optimise their games for amd hardware and obviously they don't have a big team of people with different hardware to test out on

Even though ark was sponsored by nvidia, that game ran a 100 times better on nvidia hardware (may be different/improved now though especially since it got released on consoles) and iirc, it didn't/doesn't have any nvidia specific tech. in it.... same for rust and other titles like dayz, conan exiles (although not really classified as indie titles any more) and so on.

I would be inclined to say it’s drivers as any game going onto console will be using AMD hardware optimisations. However it’s not clear. Look at the COD games, that’s an AMD optimised engine and it clearly works really well.

Agreed and the conclusion my friend and I speculated on.

It's always fun with launch reviews to try and weed through the umpteenth CyberPunk, CSGO, Spiderman etc. score looking for games that might be comparable to smaller indie titles using UE / Unity. Someone needs to inc Ark, 7 Days, Rust, ETS2 / ATS, Valheim etc. in their benchmark suite!

You not alone, I try to bring this up as well, I think they pick AAA either due to review guides, or they feel its wrong to test games that might not be well optimised. I suppose also that things like RT are almost exclusive to a few AAA titles. I always feel there is an element of doing what they told on reviews.

Damn, I was aiming for a 4080 when the price drops to around £800 but having just had a quick look on FBMP to see what people aare asking for 3080 Ti FEs, I can see some going for as low as £450.... If they're 450 now, what are they gonna be in several months time when a 4080 is much lower in price?!

I need to resist, but at the same time don't want to lose a truck load of value in my 3080 Ti FE lol.

You'll lose more buying a 4080 now than delaying selling a 3080ti. A 4080 will be 1k or under soon yet a 3080ti will probably go back up in value once people realise how rubbish the 4070/ti/4060ti/7800XT/7700XT will be.

500 for a 3080 12 gig FE might be worth it for me if I got 400+ for my own FE. Bit of a gamble though plus swapping to a card with unknown history vs my newly purchased card.

The 1080ti I sold on here the buyer commented how immaculate I kept it.

Would the 30 series used prices go back up though? They can't exceed 4070 Ti prices for example, and the 4070 Ti has frame gen going for it so no doubt people will see the higher fps numbers in the newest games with FG enabled and decide that's what they want vs a slightly cheaper used 30 series.

I might just put my card up for £750 and see if anyone bites, if they do, then I'll just jump on it given the current situation.

Ripoff.

Dude, do you really need the extra bump in performance? I mean come on, if you are going to do it, do it right and get a 4090.

Whatever I do end up getting I'll be getting without VAT anyway so price isn't a huge issue any more - Realistically I will likely never make full use of a 4090 as will not be going 4K for several more years by which point we will be at what, RTX 60 series or 70? :p

I don't think most people care about FG right now especially with the limited number of games it's in.

If your not on 4K then what's the hurry to upgrade from a 3080ti? May aswell wait till either the 4080 price drops or they drop a much faster 4080ti for the same price as the 4080 is currently going for.

A price cut will be coming very soon, the 4080 owners thread has 5 people and is 2 pages long the 7900 owners thread has 24 owners and is 23 pages and those cards have only been out a week. Nvidia isn't going to let AMD Hoover up all the sales while its own card sits in stock.

You are right, I need to calm myself! I want to be able to framecap at 142fps instead of 120 that I currently have. All these new games are running at below 100fps due to lack of optimisation which is frustrating, so a bit of brute force seems necessary these days.

I would still go 4090. I just don't see the point in going 4080 at £1200. Or even £1000 in your case. I mean sure if you can get £750 for your 3080 Ti, but let's be honest you will get £600 tops.

As it is I will stick with the 3080 TI. Will upgrade next gen unless I find something on the cheap in the meantime.

You can't judge nvidias global sales based off 5 ocuk forum posts ;)

Cba changing my PSU though, Phanteks AMP 750. I will wait for the 4080 to have its price drop. Looking at all the reviews recently and it's clear the 4080 draws on average 100 watts less than the 3080 Ti, whilst the 4090 is more. Total system draw on average well over 600 watts for the 4090, whilst it's around 450 for the 4080 system in reviews.

I really like this PSU, and also my cable routing, so don't want the faff of changing all that
