**Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti Review Thread**

I think I'm more excited to see a possible £300 980 now if the market shifts.

980's won't be £300 or less until either AMD surprises us all and releases amazing cards at low prices that totally out do Nvidia for price and performance or until the next gen (Pascal etc) come out.

I am pretty sure some of the 980Ti reviews hinted at either a 50 or 100 dollar price drop on the 980.

My top card has hit the throttle limit many times, and tbh when it does i dont get any stuttering. All that happens is the boost clock drops 13mhz. Standard 60Hz monitor here.

Back when I first got my 290 and I didn't have a good cooling setup in my antec p100, my card would throttle due to the heat and this was in June/July, which made matters even worse, no joke, the side of my case was like an oven and I could notice the performance drop, but since adding more fans etc. I haven't had any issue with the performance, just need to get my measly i5 750 upgraded! :D

Always take the temperatures of cards with a pinch of salt when it comes to reviews.Lots use open test benches which is not really a good barometer of how a cards cooler will function for end users installed in an actual case.

The TX also throttles when left to the default NVidia fan profile and a 1:1 fan is quite noisy but never see's the TX throttle, so a trade off. When I am just gaming, I allow the card to throttle to keep the noise down and I can't ever say I have noticed that in games.

For reference, here is my 3DMark Firestrike score

So the titan x also throttles, and people were having a **** fit when the 290x was doing the same thing yet its seemingly brushed under the carpet when its an nvidia gpu...

Pretty common on nvidia cards of late, iirc the gtx 670 would throttle at 70c, 79c for the gtx 780/ti and original titan. Of course you can raise the temp limit but often a custom fan profile can sort it. Trade off though is more fan noise, and apparently the tx/ti reference models are a bit loud to start with. Hence i personally prefer aftermarket cooled cards, but sometimes not ideal in multi gpu.

^My msi 970 started throttling at 67c
Custom bios fixed that tho

Still do not understand why in the hell they implemented that tho at such a low temp

Yer, but that kind of throttling is 26Mhz at most and that is boost clock throttling and not actual base clocks unlike the 290X. Mine is dropping down from 1332Mhz to 1306mhz. The actual clocks stated are 1216mhz, so not like I am being done lol. The 290X was throttling under reported clocks and badly.

To be honest I think the throttling is more down to the power limit on the stock bios.

On the maxair BIOS I was running 1500mhz and going over 70c and the card was stuck at 1500mhz.

Is it safe the assume the EVGA Hybrid cards will be nice and cool? I wanna pre order one but I dont really know much about them other than logic tells me they should be very cool and quiet? :p

Neither my TXs or 290Xs throttled on air, all that is needed is to use a custom profile.

Having said that the TXs are far easier to keep below their thermal limit than the 290Xs and the NVidia cards are far quieter too.

None of this has anything to do with the 980 Ti owner thread though.:)

Yer, could well be. I haven't really tried any overclocking this time (really enjoying my gaming again), so not really looked into it and as it made bugger all difference to my frames, I didn't really care either. I don't run with AB running when I am just gaming and only when I have done some quick and dirty testing to see what is what did I notice the drop.
