NVIDIA GTX 970 OWNERS THREAD

A nice improvement on the Ugine Valley benchmark when moving from AMD Radeon HD 6950 2048MB to Gigabyte 970 Gaming. Benchmark run at Extreme HD setting.

Before :
FPS: 25.9
Score: 1082
Min FPS: 14.8
Max FPS: 46.4

After:
FPS: 58.3
Score: 2439
Min FPS: 25.7
Max FPS: 112.5

So life is in better detail now…my processor is a little old but things work:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz with 8GB memory.

With all this talk of coil whine, and not being able to RMA them (so its not considered a fault...who made that rule up?), it's really put me off getting a 970 altogether.

I can't remember a graphics card launch with such seemingly high coil whine problems.

That coil whine thread isn't helping with it's "negative reporting only" approach.

Who said its not a fault?

Gibbo is right though. Any whine that can be heard outside the case is a fault. No high end electrical component should suffer from whine unless it is of poor quality or manufactured inadequately.

I dont see how its such a high problem. There are only 32 people who have voted in the poll. How many of those are due to the PSU being the issue ? It could be 50% it could be 10% its not a very good guide to be honest. OCUK must have sold 1000's of 970's.

Dont let it put you off. There is a heck of a lot more people happy with their 970's you just dont hear about it. There will be loads who bought a 970 who dont even use the forum. The thread is not very good it would also need to add an option for people with no coil whine to put it in perspective.

Don't think mine is coil wine, I can just hear the fans a lot more than anything else in my pc.

I don't even care about having a card with zero coil whine, my other 970 has it but It's barely any louder then then 800rpm case fans, I can just turn the fans up to 900rpm and can't hear the whine anymore.

The second card, and the card that I'm not happy with is a lot worse.

I've considered gluing the chokes but why should I take the cooler off and void the warranty on a £260 graphics card that's only a few weeks old.

tbh I certainly wouldn't do that if I was in your shoes.

The only reason i'd consider doing that with mine is because a. it's not that bad and easily liveable (cant hear it with case side panel on) and b. i'll be removing the heatsink anyway for water so might as well do it.

Yeah its on a riser. I just wanted to be able to show off the waterblock instead of it being hidden. Kind of defeats the point of having a nice matching block.

Rule of thumb guys is pay for gfx cards via credit card then if a return if refused because "coil whine is normal" just do a charge back.

In fact, I only ever use credit cards to buy high value items due to the extra buyer protection cc's provide.

And then get black listed by the company.

I have a friend who ordered something from OcUK years ago. It never arrived at his address due to his house being in a bit of a maze and tried contacting OcUK when their CS was awful (this was a number of years ago now)

He couldn't get hold of them so called his credit card and told them the above. They refunded the amount and obviously OcUK saw this and black listed his address. (from what he tells me)
