Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

I left the VRM heatsink on, it's got it's own dedicated fan on the top of the card and the Kraken G10 adds a second so it should arguably be just as cool, or cooler than before. I really wish I could monitor those temps anyway though.

This is the HerculeZ VRM heatsink that sits on top, the fan is mounted on the top of the Inno 3d 980 version (well the air boss).

edit: resized image it was massive!

Well after 4 hours of Furmark and 2 of Heaven benchmark the max temp is now 50 degrees. Oddly Heaven never pushed it as hard as Furmark and only got it to 47.

finally managed to get the G1 gaming Bios onto my gigabyte OC power limit also modded to 140% & core voltage can go up to +100mV now.

got mine running stable at 1,621mhz boost & 8,002mhz on the memory and with the H55 cooling it temps never went above 50 bench marking it.

My Firestrike Standard test results

Score 13,469
Graphics 16,370

Dont know, its not for my card as mine is running sammys.

Did you ever use the F3 or F42 bios for yours ? I cant work out from the download page whether either of these are suitable for either of my GPU's.

One is a V1.1 with Samsung 84.04.1F.40.01 and the other
is a V1.0 with Samsung 84.04.1F.00.B8

Can I ask what the problem was with the air boss ultra temps?

I have did all my benchmarks and socked for hours on heaven and never exceeded 64c and 45% fan speed....

Interested as my inno3d 970 ran hot all the time.

However this card just does not get hot at all.... or make any noise. (120mm sys fan is louder)

For me the small fan on top was just too annoying. I could hear a vibration and whine so I sent mine back. That and I got a fab chance on buying on 2 x Gaming G1's cheap.

The bios you use is the same series as the current one.

If yours is F1, then use F3, if it's in the 40 range use the F42 etc...

Use Gigabytes @BIOS. It will tell you what version you are running and allow you to flash as well.

Ahh thanks opethdisciple and Stulid one of my cards is on F40 so for that F42. Just need to check the other card.
Seems a bit of a faff having to update both bios by using DVI cable in each port in turn.
Wonder if it can be done with the DP cable.

Looks like a good card that, nice score.

Out of interest is anybody still runnning a bios mod here on their cards?

I've noticed something strange today which I hadn't before when mining (crypto coins) which is what my card does during the day when i'm at work.

When I first got the card I noticed an improvement with mining when using the custom bios and with no limits being shown in GPUz The software doesn't take into memory clock so ignoring that for the time being.

However with recent driver updates and stuff i've noticed that the card actually produces much better results on the stock bios compared to before? At the same clock speed (1593) and with limits shown in GPUz i'm getting around 11300khash/s compared to when running the same core clock on the modded bios of 10300 something.

Can't really put my finger on it as nothing else has changed on this system apart from driver updates

People still mine?

I do. Some people enjoy the theory of it and didn't just jump onto the bandwagon once word got around that you could make something from it.

I'd much rather make some stock now and hold onto it should it eventually explode than think "poo, I missed out on that one".

You only have to look at the guy who mined bitcoins directly on his laptop when it first started, then threw millions of £s worth away by accident to see that the potential is there.

I heard some rumours about certain 980's not waking up via display port? maybe that is what the firmware fixes?

Mine has issues occasionaly with 4K over display port 90% of the time its fine but the odd boot it doesn't recognise the monitor and only my 1080p works, restart fixes that though. Still does it now with up-to-date bios and my custom one on it atm.

Thanks. its mostly due to the custom bios from the G1 and it letting me increase to 140% & 100mVa
