Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

Thanks mate, so as a general rule of thumb then it's a 1:2 ratio so if I wanted to up core another 25 I would add 50 on mem and check benchmark?

I bought a Palit Jetstream GTX 980 recently and am amazed by how much I can overclock it, and how quiet and cool it runs, it's so quiet even on full fan (which is not needed) and I never hear it during normal use, fantastic card giving great results.

At the moment im running it at stock as it does not need to be overclocked to run well.

Can't wait to get GTA V to put it through it paces.

I will bench it again on the Haven benchmark and submit my result to get on the leader board, should be in the top 20 :D .

Just thought I would pop this in here for those who haven't seen it. Take it with a pinch of salt, as Star Swarm isn't a demo I am a fan of but if it is accurate, it is looking good for you pesky 980 owners :D

No.

Long version

Start with the +100 and +200. If your benchmark completes with no issues, then up the core clock by +25 and repeat. Eventually, your benchmark will crash. When it does, lower your core clock by -10 (or -25 if you want to be absolutely sure).

Reboot after any crash.

You have then found your highest core clock.

Repeat the process for mem clock, +25 at a time until you find your highest mem clock. You will see graphical artifacts when you're at or near your highest mem clock.

Keep an eye on your core clock in Afterburner during bench tests. If your core clock gets lowered by -13 during a benchmark, then your card's been throttled. This may be because temperature has gone above 70c, or power is above 100%.

Short version

Set it +150 core / +250 mem and enjoy.

What does this mean? A 40% performance increase with the same game running DX12 instead of DX11?

Thanks for that mate I appreciate it.

What is a safe temp for a 980 Strix to operate over long periods? (Long gaming sessions). With a decent overclock mine is approaching the 80 degree mark after a good few hours playing Elite Dangerous. Is this ok?

Ideally below 70c. If it's at 80, it should be throttling the core clock?

Why so hot? Bad airflow or have you upped the volts too much? Have you OC'd it?

It means that DX12 is looking very good for Maxwell owners. Time will tell how good of course but with that showing an over 50% speed advantage over the 290X, it is showing that nVidia have good communication with Microsoft.

I have had my 980 Classified for over a week now and I can bench it for hours on end using 3D Mark and Heaven Benchmark on air using -
+100 core
+300 mem
(Everything else stock)

As soon as I start a game with this OC it crashes within minutes, sometimes seconds.
If I reduce the OC to -
+50 core
(Everything else stock) my games still crash. If I reduce my core to +30 then I can play games stable.
I have tried everything and the only way I can play games without crashing using my "benchmark OC" is by using K Boost.

I have tried formatting, every 980 driver released and all 3 bios settings and it still it crashes with a mild OC whilst gaming.
If the majority of people with a 980 Classified aren't getting this then is my card a dud. Is an extra +50 core clock too much to ask for when playing games?
I am still within the 14 day period to get a full refund, should I just swap the card for a new one?
