This new 5070 series GPU pretending to be a 5080 is still the 3rd fastest gpu in existence. Much better value than a crusty old worn out 4090 from flea bay

If that was in response to my post, I'm not comparing it to a used 4090. I'm asking why on earth people are paying £1700 for a 5080 now when they could have bought a 4090FE for under £1600 last year. Who on earth said "nah, I won't upgrade now, I'll wait and get something more expensive and slower"?!

At least you're getting a liquid cooled one for that. I'm actually more shocked that they've sold 10 of the £1700 Suprim today. Who the hell is paying £1700 for a 5080 when you could have bought a 4090 for less last year?

I was thinking these are overpriced at £979, due it to really being a 70 class card. at £1700 there must be some compulsive buying going on? Ah well each to their own.

This launch has not been fun, but looking forward now. Roll on AMD and Intel's new tech and Nvidia's 6000 series.

They saved a few quid on packaging this gen I see.

Last gen packaging was stupidly over the top, this gen it's like a GPU from war on want with how the packaging is.

Don't see what was wrong with the old cardboard sleeves with the plastic clamshell underneath.

It wasn't in response to you but I'll respond to this post.

Please, stop assuming everyone who is upgrading now was somehow ready and willing to upgrade a year or 2 ago - it simply doesn't work like that. Those people may not have wanted to upgrade back then for different reasons - circumstances, finances, the games they were playing, etc, etc. It's all well and good telling people what they should and shouldn't have done years ago when you have the benefit of hindsight, but you're looking at it with a very narrow perspective. The only thing that matters is what is the right choice for people who want to upgrade right now.

/edit also to highlight more the ridiculousness of your comment - you're implying that people should have been able to see into the future and know that the 5080 would not be like the 80 class cards we would normally expect. I mean WTF.

"We saw the 5080 pop up in a few places, but lets be real, nobody wants that"
Boy spitting facts... yet somehow retailers are selling 1800 5080s and they sold out.
I hope it was scalpers who thought they struck gold lmao.
I counted 84 on the reseller place so it looks like many were bought by scalpers.
