NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

I'm asking why on earth people are paying £1700 for a 5080 now when they could have bought a 4090FE for under £1600 last year. Who on earth said "nah, I won't upgrade now, I'll wait and get something more expensive and slower"?!

I'm having a bit of a strange issue and I'm hoping someone knows why. I'm not seeing any increase going from 2x-4x frame gen in Cyberpunk and Alan Wake 2? 2x is a nice bump and that's it, won't go higher.

It wasn't in response to you but I'll respond to this post.

Please, stop assuming everyone who is upgrading now was somehow ready and willing to upgrade a year or 2 ago - it simply doesn't work like that. Those people may not have wanted to upgrade back then for different reasons - circumstances, finances, the games they were playing, etc, etc. It's all well and good telling people what they should and shouldn't have done years ago when you have the benefit of hindsight, but you're looking at it with a very narrow perspective. The only thing that matters is what is the right choice for people who want to upgrade right now.

/edit also to highlight more the ridiculousness of your comment - you're implying that people should have been able to see into the future and know that the 5080 would not be like the 80 class cards we would normally expect. I mean WTF.
Agreed.

The smugness of 4090 owners is getting a bit silly now. Not one of them thought they were buying a GPU that would outdo the next gen's 80-class when they bought their 4090s, just the same as people (like myself) who didn't upgrade at the time. My 3080 was fine until second half of last year when I felt it was time to upgrade. If you had asked on here what GPU to buy, everyone would've said (and did say) "wait for 50 series".

Possibly driver related, DDU the current driver and start afresh with the new 50 series driver see if that cures it.

That was the first thing I did unfortunately. I can't seem to find anyone with a similar issue on Google.

As consumers i think we are all hoping that the latest generation of GPU's are going to blow us away with extra performance and give us all more value for money.. but unfortunately it does seem like that isn't the case.
We can look at this two ways, as 4090 owners we can think we have still got the 2nd best GPU on the market, had it for over 2 years and anyone who buys a 5080 is silly for paying silly prices (although in my opinion paying £1700 for a 5080 is kind of stupid)

Or we can all be dissapointed as this is the worst generational uplift from one 80 series to another but people that need the upgrade now just have to pick from what they have infront of them.. the only alternative is going 5090 route or go AMD route.. personally AMD are too far behind in tech and ray tracing for me to consider that route and that goes for many others as well.. especially now we are seeing more games that require RT GPU's.

What i dont understand is the sudden bashing of the 4090, yes some of it is banter but from some it is pretty constant and they must get a hard on from it or something.

One last thing, value is different for different people, some value the monetary side of things and how much they can resale it for and others put it up against the new stack of GPU's and see where it slots in and in this case its still 2nd best.. no matter how you want to swing things.

Yes hindsight is a wonderful thing. For me it’s not aimed at the customers, it’s aimed at Nvidia’s business practices.

Some people have a “skip a generation” upgrade cycle and just happened to pay their slightly less extortionate prices at a slightly better time.

If I didn’t think a 4090 was worth the silly money 2 years ago, why would I think it’s worth £1200 - £1400 used now? I would still prefer to wait for an MSRP 5080 than take a chance on a used 4090 with zero warranty.

Though I do see how laughable it is to pay £1400 on a 5080. That is not remotely hindsight, that’s just nuts IMHO. But hey, it’s their money.

you should have got a b grade one when they first came out. 4090s were 1050 quid. those that got em laughing now. they were brand new too. :p

There are a new set of DLSS/FG/RR out, have you downloaded and tried those?

It's funny how 95% of sites are full of captcha, but these tech sites that sell high value low supply products, don't employ any anti-bot measures.

palit gamerock was reviewed, one of the cheapest and seems solid. above the FE in FPS by a little, cooler (nowhere near as cool as other AIBs, but it's cheaper) and quieter.
Ugly as a ginger, and absolutely massive. One massive downside is 2 year warranty which is lowest of the low.

I like it though. it's why I preordered one over the Zotac.

Palit is a solid choice, Watercool has announced they will make Heatkiller block for them.

does it really make any difference to them who buys the product I will sell anything to anyone I couldnt care one way or the other how much extra they charge customers or resell the product for

as a buisiness you just need to get the margin high and stock turn flowing

Because why do they care

If I own an online pc store I'd do the same. Why do I care who buys the GPU

If reports of some sites allowing checkouts before the page has even gone live are true i suspect they're interacting with site in a more direct manner, similar to how Wget on Linux allows you to request/receive data directly to/from the web server.

The joys of early adoption, with the exception of a handful of reviewers you're likely one of the first people to try it out in the wild, so you get to be the first to discover bugs. Make notes you you can share what you needed to do to fix it for the next guy :P
