Hi folks,

I'm looking at potentially purchasing a 5080 card, my space is limited in my case to about 3.5 slots, but is there a certain card/brand people would recommend?

I'm not looking to have it overclocked either and my psu is an 850w platinum Superflower.

The FE should probably be your top choice if space is the issue. It cools very well and is more compact than anything else I have seen. The MSI Ventus 3X OC and OC plus are 2 and a half slots so also could fit if they are not too long. (Card Dimension (mm) 303 x 121 x 49 mm).
 
Is anyone using or planning to use the original 12VHPWR native PSU cable instead of the updated 12V-2x6 cable? I have the Cablemod 600w 12VHPWR 2x8 pin cable for the current 4090 and presumed I would be OK to continue using that for the 5090. I have read some contradicting opinions from googling though.

Yeah I was looking at this version as well, it feels like a sort of downgrade coming from the EVGA 3080ti though lol
 
A fascinating video for the true nerds amongst us. Contains some interesting thoughts on yields and pricing towards the end (c.$300-400 for the die, similar again for the memory). The die could not be much smaller and maintain a 512 bit bus as it requires the space around the edge of the die.

The FE's feel very premium and look very professional, they also hold their value well. My only concerns about them is do they suffer the same issue with PCI-e Gen 5 that the 5090 FE does or is the design different, and is the coil whine worse than other brands.

I got the Asus Prime 5080 OC, its 2.5 slots. Was also eyeing the Gigabyte Windforce SFF 5080.

I can't say I've ever tried to see what happens if I only give my 4090 3x 8pin instead of the full 4x but I guess for 5090 owners it's an easy way to power limit the card without the need for software intervention.
 
Not really. To run any of the deep reasoning LLM you neeed to be running the 70b versions whoch require around 40gb RAM/Vram
Yep, which is why neither 4090 nor 5090 are a competition to several pro cards. Yet the price is creeping up to that level each generation. :/

The power rating for 2x8pin cables is 150W, but they can probably pull more. One thing to remember is that neither the PSU or GPU will care what cable is connected between them. The GPU will pull as much power as it needs, and the PSU will provide as much power as it can. If the ampage drawn exceeds the cable's tolerance it will melt and possibly burn. I don't recommend pushing limits of industrial safe ratings. Your GPU will come with a cable, you should use the cable provided with the hardware or if used aftermarket cable, then ensure is stated by the manufcaturer to be 100% compatible with your hardware. If you are not sure you could contact Cablemod and follow their guidelines.

The major difference between 12VHPWR and updated 12V-2x6 cable is that the sensing pins cannot be physically connected anymore even when the plug is connected at weird angles.They shortened the sensing pins and made the power delivery pins thicker with more solder I think.

Personally, I would either use the cable that GPU arrives with.
