*****OcUK Benchmark Results from ATI HD 69xx Series*****

I don't understand why you'd think HD6970 will be more than 15% faster than HD6950 at any time but a very few benches?

Let's examine the performance and clock differences with comparison to HD5800s:

The 6970 has 10% higher clocks than the 6950.
It has 9% more shaders.
It has 14% more TMUs.
The same number of ROPs.

It is 10-12% ahead.

Seems about right?

HD5870 had 17% higher core clocks and 20% higher memory clocks.
The 5870 had 11% more shaders.
It had 11% more TMUs.
The same number of ROPs.

The performance difference was around 15%.

Problem? :D

Willing to select an item of clothing/ body part to eat if your assumtions are incorrect? :D
Chill out for a few more hrs or you might end up looking more foolish than you do already.

pls contribute something to this thread or don't post :D

Looking over at semi accurate forums they sound a bit disillusioned.

These facts come from charlie so they are probably accurate:-

"So AMD/ATI is replacing the 5870/Cypress @ $40/334mm2 with the $55/389mm2 6950/Cayman ?"
"Why bother?"
"And doubling the memory and selling it for the same price that the 5870 sold for a few months ago. These days only way to win the consumer GPU game is not to play. "

Little hope is pinned on the magical drivers making an appearance.

The cost doesn't tell us anything. Chalie also quotes GF100 as being $250 (seems very unlikely) or so and GF110 costing them $100.

Don't know where you got the second quote from but it's definitely taken out of context.

The third quote tells you that they spend more money on memory without increasing the prices. I think the memory costs are lower anyway, what does it have to do with the card, I don't know.

Why did you quote these things again? :)

Pricing is quite remarkable for a hard launch with this kind of power (tips hat to OC). Are people missing it's not that far off a 580 and that launched and still is considerable higher.

High end gpu, hard launch (inadvance of nda, naughty ;)), sub £300, omg what's not to like!

I have to say these prices are great from AMD. The 6800 will need to drop some what seeing as there is only £40 difference between the cheapest 6870 and the cheapest 6950, hell, the MSI 6870 is the same price as the HIS 6950....

well just plumped up the plastic for one of the HIS 6970 cards, it'll be replacing my 4870x2 which is a good old work horse but a tad noisey and runs very hot. It'll be here thursday and it'll feel like christmas has come a week early.

I'm presuming that's exactly where the problem lies, surely it should be faster than the 580
The end result says not and only AMD know if that was intentional or not (the 580 blinded everyone in it's sudden appearance!).

580 gpu = £430
6970 gpu = £280

AMD have ended up with their gpu close to the 580 in terms of performance but far better value for money. With the exception of a few titles much of the performance is 60fps+ anyway so being 10 - 15% isn't the end of the world.

I don't see this as a bad card or negative launch at all. It's not the quickest single gpu based upon current drivers but then it isn't costing top money either.

i really think martini needs to rear is head and prove this magical free card he got given by sapphire, cause at the moment i'm thinking along the lines of pics or it didn't happen. screen grabs of the drivers your using, box for the card with your ocuk name on there.

What he really needs is the Hovis test :)

I seen someone a couple of pages back say if you select royal mail special delivery you would get it up to Scotland? I assume weather permitting of course. Can anyone comment on that, my understanding is it would be quite unlikely to get a speedy delivery regardless. If I can't get it up here quickly I wont bother ordering quite just yet, don't wan't it sitting in some depo over xmas.

Think I will just wait and see how the land lays in January, the 6970 is quite disappointing going by the reviews and even at £279.99 doesn't scream out to be bought. Not when the 570 is priced similarly. Shame, I have been excited about this card for a while now.
