OcUK Dadsnet thread

My little terror is now 20 months old. He is starting to talk but in his own language. It's quite funny to listen to him yabber on to him self. This last two (nearly) years have flown by and it's amazing how they develop over this short time period.

Repetition has been the key to my little ones getting their words. Suddenly coming along in leaps and bounds. Favourite word.... NO >.<

Yep, repetition is the key. We bought our 21 month old son a load of foam letters and numbers for in the bath and some magnetic ones for the fridge when he was about 17 months and he now knows his ABCs and 1-10.

He hasn't learned the word "no" yet, thankfully. Not sure how though, it's just about all I say to him.

"Put that down it's dirty" "Don't touch that it's hot" "Take your hand out of that" "Don't put your finger in the cat's ear" .... Obviously loads of praise for good behaviour too , have noticed they will sometimes stop one step short of something naughty, then clap themselves, to show they know not to do it, which I think is very sweet.

See, this is what worries me a little. He knows abc and 123etc at 17 months yet mine does not. I am not sure he knows anything yet. We have tried and got blocks with 123 abc and animlas on them etc but he is not interested. He uses them to stack which he can do 12 now :D but he is not doing his basic abc etc It does make me think if we are doing it right or not but then again I know all babies develop totaly different speeds and ways.

Children do develop differently, as a father of two they are like chalk and cheese but do bounce of each other intellectually as well as emotionally. Encourage them to develop but bear in mind they are still children and allow them the time to progress at there own leisure.

Bags and bags of reassurances are needed, engage in their interests and not something they should be doing at a specific age, it will all sort itself out eventually. Children are our greatest assets in life and I cannot think what my life would be like without them. Plus when I get older and need an extra organ or two or a place to live I see it as a future investment :p

My daughter is 7 weeks old tomorrow, I'm amazed at how fast that time has flown!

We take pictures almost every day and comparing the pics from the day she was born to now, she's already grown sooo much.

Thankfully when it comes to feeding she is solely on the boob so not had to fork out a fortune on formula, my wife however has just started expressing into bottles and keeping them in the fridge so we have food for morning feeds etc.

From very early on we've had her in a very basic routine where we bath her (every other day at 6pm) and feed her from 6.30pm. once she's been fed and burped we put her down in her moses basket (with the monitor on). She will usually sleep through until about 3am and wake for another feed before going back down until my alarm goes off at 5.50am.

From what my parents say about me as a baby (pretty much cried non stop until I was about 5 years old) I'm happy to say my daughter doesn't take after me in this respect :D she has her moments like any other baby but on the whole she's pretty well behaved (so far).

I came home from work yesterday and for the first time she was laying on her play mat cooing to herself and hitting the rattles, the wife and I just had to watch in admiration as this was big development for us.

It's definitely been a massive learning curve for us but hell, being a dad so far has been amazing :)

Cant wait for her to start teething now :(

It goes really fast man, so enjoy it as much as you can! Can't believe mine is coming up on 6 months. I swear it was yesterday we had her in her moses basket and she only took up half of it. Now she's a big squishy thing that can take her own weight on her legs (bugger all balance at this point but she can stay sat up and not fall over now).

Best part is that it just seems to get better as they interact with you more. Best part of my day is walking in the door and my daughter gives me the biggest grin like she's been waiting for me all day.

Sometimes that does seem to be the only word im telling my daughter:p Even tho we live up north she seems to put a posh spin on it which is hilarious. My son was born just over 2 weeks ago and she is very protective of him and likes stroking his head.

So my 1 year old is going into her own bedroom soon, any recommendations on baby monitors or other solutions to see and hear her while she is on her own.

We use a Motorola monitor, the model isn't printed on the device but it was about £70 online.

We put our baby in his own room at 5 months. Everyone slept better including baby.

Edit: model is MBP36S

We're debating when to put ours in her own room, as she is now 6 months (gonna be trying solid food soon). Our main concern is that she has started rolling onto her belly and hasn't yet got the strength to roll back over. So she just sticks her face down into the blanket.

We are moving from a 1 bedroom flat to a 2 bedroom house, that's why my 1 year old is going to her own room.

Anyone got any thoughts on using a web cam of some sort for baby monitoring instead of a dedicated audio & video baby monitor?

The temptation was definitely there but i told myself that with two, one would let me know if something was up with the other. Has proven true so far and it's un-natural, we managed years ago before all this was available and we turned out just fi...oh wait.

But seriously, trust your instincts

I'll say it over and over, one thing that is never on shopping lists : clothes pegs :D buy 2 or 3 times more than you currently have!

Got an old android phone? Lots of app's available that turn them into video + audio monitors!
