OcUK Dadsnet thread

Anyone elses young one insists on playing with your hair whilst they're falling asleep? My 2Yo will not go to sleep without playing with my hair.

Not my child she hates anything and everybody at bedtime lol

My niece however used to do this, she's now 15 and still, if sat at the side of me will start playing with the few strands of hair she can find on my head !

Two year old now refuses to get in the car to go anywhere, takes about 30 mins and lots of tears to try and get her in , joys.
Wow, 30 mins. Have you tried a tablet/phone playing one of her favourite shows? You can get a cheap mount to hold it from the headrest.

I’m having those thoughts to be honest. Every time I try to raise how we’re bringing up our daughter or suggest a way forward different to what my wife thinks, it either get’s shut down or she’s “too upset to talk about it”.
Couples therapy seems an appropriate solution right now. I imagine there is something triggering for your wife about having your kid in nursery and the fact she's choosing not to engage about it probably further reinforces the point. You've said about private diagnostics for your daughter so you are financially/time capable of having external specialist help so basically.. no excuses :p. Hopefully you can go together and find a way forwards because if not it's going to become one of the inevitable parenting disagreements that does bubble over into everyday life. Good luck and keep us updated.

Tried it yesterday, it worked, but our lass works for cahms/social so naturally hates phones/tablets around kids so not a real solution that we can use.

Better than the alternative surely? Plus it's being used as a "TV" not an interactive device.
Or does your lass hate TVs too? (Then I'm fresh outta ideas!)

You say that now. Wait until they start bringing boys, girls or thems home.

I wanted girls before I had my two boys and its completely changed my mind. I think that you just can't imagine anything better than what you have so you automatically want more of that. I wouldn't mind a girl if we had another but I would be perfectly happy with either.

With some of the poos they have been doing lately however I am glad they are boys for the cleanup! :(
I'm already practicing my 'Reggie' scene from Bad Boys 2 :p
But yeah, you're right. Whatever comes I'll think is the best thing ever. I just didn't think I'd take to a girl so well. Completely wrapped around her finger. Though saying that most of my closest friends are girls so there is that lol.

Babies on planes are ok - in fact they’re pretty easy as they don’t want for too much apart from milk and a clean nappy. It’s toddlers you want to watch out for! The danger years are 1.5 - 4. We’ve been on a number of flights with our young kids and they’ve been brilliant. A fantastic tip is to wrap loads of tiny things in wrapping paper - snacks, pens, toys etc etc. My wife suggested this and I thought she was crazy. I wouldn’t go on any holiday with young children without doing this now. Unwrapping takes some time and attention and they can play with or eat the contents (or both!). Also works for meals out and about when on holiday.

Unrelated but that reminds me of one of my first nightmares. Watching Jaws when I went to bed in my dreams I was throwing rocks at the sharks in the sea thinking I was safe. The buggers grew arms and legs and chased me up the beach!

I don't partake in stone skipping now.

I'd be reaching for Miss Rachel in that instant. A hateful woman but my lord she knows how to get kids to calm down.

Looking for recommendations where to take a 19 month old for a short trip away. Don’t want more than a 4 hour flight and looking to go in November or December.

I'd say anywhere warm with a child friendly pool. We took our son to Orlando (not 4 hours away, I know) when he was 18 months old and he effectively lived in the pool. Shallow pool with little slides and lots of floating games for him to play.

Orlando might work, we can fly upper class with Virgin Atlantic for cheap depending on flight loads.

If you can make Orlando work then I would definitely suggest it. Your little one will love the Parks and the pool. You have to be careful not to do too much though, and many Parks is many bucks nowadays! Pick a resort with great facilities and only do the parks you really want to, with rest for the little one between them. Now our little one is 15 we concentrate on Universal and haven't been to the Disney Parks for ages. Little ones though, love Disney, especially if they see the characters on TV before they go. I have fond memories of our little boy absolutely entranced by a talking (remote controlled) palm tree whilst queuing to get in to Disney one morning. They make the kids feel special there.

@ChrisD. - if you’re after sunshine then Canary Islands aren’t a bad option. Plenty of resorts that cater well for young kids. I’ve been converted to all inclusive a of late. They work so well with young kids. Buffet eating works well as you’re not using up valuable sitting down time waiting to order food. My expectations have been well and truly managed with young children in tow!

I’m going to be harsh and suggest that you don’t bother with Disney or theme parks with an 18 month old. They will get just as much enjoyment being with you wherever you go, and simple things like digging in the sand will entertain for hours. Waiting in theme park queues fill me with dread right now. Flying virgin upper class would help - especially with a flat bed to sleep on. Saying that, there will be a lot of walking up and down the aisle and caged animal energy whatever class you fly!

In a few years we’ll head to Florida with ours I’m sure, but I think it’d be a bit wasted right now. Our daughter at 6 is probably just getting to the age where she’ll enjoy it, but I’m not sure she’d get on any of the decent rides.

I agree. We went to florida before we had kids, and while we are going to take them there at some point we've been waiting fir them to be old enough. We might take them 2025 as my son will be 8/9 and my daughter 12. I've had a look recently and I don't think prices have actually changed that much in the 12 years we last went (it's still expensive though).
