** OcUK & GALAX COLLABORATION: INFINITY BECOMES REALITY, THE BEST 970 ON THE MARKET!! **

Silent Black Edition not descriptive enough for you?

Gibbo scours the planet for genuine titanium panels from SR-71 Blackbird stealth planes to help craft his fan shroud, the card is manufactured under tight secrecy in a bunker somewhere in South East Asia, and shipped via nuclear submarine under the North Pole and you're not happy?

There's just no pleasing some folks :D

Love it! :)

I expect the answer will be no, but there's no harm in being cheeky and asking. Will this be sneaking its way into the Black Friday sales with one of your classic silly prices?

If not then, since Return of the Obra Dinn and The Escapists aren't exactly the most taxing of games, I'll wait until the January sales and GTAV's release for my GPU upgrade

I am afraid not sorry.

great stuff Gibbo, could I please ask what is the total length of the card (including the cooler)

Cheers

Sorry to post in here but I can't seem to get a reply two about the last 10 posts I've made on graphics cards. i'll give up after this.

I'm trying to decide on a card by tonight before deals end)

I am restricted by dimensions and about the only cards to fit is the Galax, Evga and the OCUK with Nvidia reference cooler.

I'm most tempted now with REF cooler 970 but am wondering about its overclocking potential and wether i'd be better with Galax.

My concern is airflow and my case being an oven as there won't be much space between parts.

Anyone with a reference cooler 970? how do you find it? its at ideal size for my case/

Any advice before midnight would be massively appreciated here.

Small case or one with poor airflow or lack of space reference for sure or otherwise Galax.

yeh thats what I thought but I have concerns over the overclock potential of ocuk reference.

As you designed it, would you mind expanding on this for me? I am clueless about all of this but as it has a premium, I could do with some clarification.

Do non reference cards just blow hot air inside the computer case? They all seem to oc quite well.

I do have ok airflow but its cramped. using a lian li pc50 mid tower case.

Yes, non-reference cards will blow hot air in to the case, hence the open fans on top. The reference blows it all out the back. In a poor airflow case you really don't want hot air dumped into the case as it won't get ventilated very well and will heat up the cards and the other components. You obviously don't want this to happen. I am not familiar with your case but it doesn't seem the best for cooling. Keep in mind you can overclock the reference cards, and people have done so with good results, so these two cards really aren't that far apart. As an owner of the 970 myself, I can assure you it's a quality piece of kit with an expensive feel.

its hard to judge the airflow but as I have a corsair h80 taking up room and exhausting cpu heat to rear. its upto the two top 140mm fans to remove any other heat. It might ve fine but exhausting gpu heat to the rear outter case seems less risky to me.

looking at the ocuk with ref cooler everything looks ideal other than its boost speeds

problem is I dont know how that relates to real world gaming at 1080p ultra settings.

I feel like I might be paying more for less performance.

id value anyones opinion on this.

Real world performance will be negligible at best. You won't notice, there would be a couple FPS in it at most I'd say, even if you aren't that lucky with the silicon lottery.

so I am probably obsessing when analysing all these 970 card's boost speeds?

As a complete noob to this, why do people obsess over getting the best oc boosts to their cards if real world difference is negligible?

Epeen and benchmarks mostly. Thing is, don't see the 970 as a basic card... it's actually a very good one, and should overclock well.

cheers for the advice.

I was confused by another thread that said the ocuk nvidia ref edition is not for overclocking.

it does beg the question why more cards dont use the sealed ref cooler? has to be much better at removing heat from all components and case surely?

otherwise id take my pick of any 970.

Gibbo had his clocked to 1500, very impressive. You're always at the mercy of the individual card, but why anyone would say the ref isn't for OC'ing is beyond me, and utter nonsense.

For single card setups in a bigger case with great air flow, the justification for reference over non-ref is harder to argue, especially with the price premium. But in a poor air flow case, it swings in its favour, and CONSIDERABLY more so if you wanted to go SLI in the future.

thanks for clearing that up.

tbf the comment I made about reading that you cnt oc the ref card was due to me not properly reading / understanding gibbos thread as there is discussion about both the ref and galax cards.

Ref seems capable in performance as any other 970 which I am glad about.

I can pull the trigger and order one now.
