I think the confusion for me was also that it comes with nvidia reference speed out the box and most others have pushed a higher oc out the box e.g Galax and G1

Well we now have 970 covered.

Next project will be an all out 8 Pack 980 Edition, so big OC, killer looks and huge OC potential with a whopping price tag.

Out of box it's identical as clocks same, but this is quieter and no coil whine.

OC wise depends on silicon, expect 1450-1650 from either card on core.

The black would certainly suit my PC better but I want to get the best bang for buck so to speak.

The performance out of the box between the two will be very similar, so buy the one which suits you best aesthetically.
