On that note, are we going for the Saturday or the Sunday (assuming that the 20/21st is pretty much confirmed)?

I'd prefer the Saturday personally.

Whilst I don't really post here much any more, I might also be interested and provisionally OK for any of those dates. Odd that you're missing out the Cat & Fiddle climb though. Main issue for me is getting there for an early start.

The route isn't set in stone but the one I've suggested heads to the C&F via Brickworks, Pyms and the Goyt Valley, which I'd argue are substantially nicer (and similarly challenging) climbs/roads. Personally I hate going through Macclesfield. Obviously it's a group decision though :)

I think that looks like part of the route I did with OneMoreSolo, and the hill next to Mam Tor at 95km (can't remember its name..is it Winnats Pass?) I do remember as being particularly brutal.

That's called Mam Nick I believe. Winnats is the road straight up from Castleton and is a bit steeper and a less enjoyable climb since it's a main thoroughfare.

It's a nice climb to hit at 95km either way. :p

I'd like to do the cat and fiddle, but as all of the ride will be new ground for me, and I've hopefully got many years of riding ahead of me I can leave it for now. Besides, I'll be slow enough as it is on a route like this - I don't want to hit the good bit twenty miles in and then be useless for the rest of the ride.

Not pleasant, really? I've done it once and it's a brilliant climb.

My definition of a brilliant climb is anything uphill with picturesque scenery and it certainly fits that definition. It's not a hard climb though. But as you said it's a group decision anyway and if I can make it I'm happy to do whatever, except Winnats Pass. Just no. :D

Perhaps I was overstating it a little. My main issue is that it's a busy road. On top of that it involves going through Macclesfield. Brickworks, Pyms and then Goyt is nicer overall, whilst still being filled with decent climbs so given that I think we need to choose between the two I vote for the one I personally like more :p If there's a way to do both I wouldn't be against it though.

I really enjoyed the cat and the fiddle climb with OMS but it was quiet as we'd gone out early but...I'm easy. I will go with the majority vote (another poll? :p).

I've asked a mod to edit the title to confirm Saturday the 20th.

C&F isn't all that bad. Its a steady climb, then becomes flat/downhill, then a steady climb again. Its horrible when the weather is bad though. In terms of traffic, I've never seen it aa a problem. It isn't dangerously busy, it's not a narrow road, it's pretty clear. People tend to pass with space, and because of the bends, they are not going fast. And that's me, I'm sensitive to crappy busy roads.

But I agree. You should do Brickworks, Pyms and then Goyt. It is nicer, more challenging, more difficult and nicer roads.

I guess I always think of the traffic as it is at the top of the hill near the C&F itself, where you've got lots of idiots on motorbikes doing 100mph. Sounds like it's not as bad as that.

Also, it all looks really fast as you're freewheeling down it at 30+mph :p

After thinking about it, I'd go with the Goyt. Its just nicer. Especially on a sunny day. If you are going to go out of the way to do the Cat, then you should do it all, not half :)
