I had this happen with the 6950 every so often. I assumed it was a driver issue as I never had it with the 4870.
Maybe not the case, if you are having it on the GTX460 also though...

What options do lowly non admins have for cart propulsion? Are there any cart mods running I can use? I'm a noob when it comes to redstone circuits and whatnot but is it possible to have nether like railways on the surface without an admins help?
What about those closed loop/dual track boosters?

Don't worry I don't have any massive national rail type projects planned!

We're running Minecart Mania so you can build boosters with gold blocks and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

Nether and Railways

I don't really trust the nether mods at the moment so I'm tempted to not get it re-enabled until it's better supported in MC itself.

Instead, I was considering adding a mod that would allow people to build teleporters on the end of their railways. I would probably limit this ability to admins and to one or two "transport ministers" (hind, I'm looking at you

). This would allow us to get some kind of fast travel up and running whilst the nether is out of action.

So, in essence what we'd be using is a track in the real world but shorter and not arriving at the destinations. But at the end of each track ( just like in the nether ) there will be a portal type teleporter to the home?

This means that: tracks will be a lot easier to manage (straight lines for the win), separate railway lines can be linked much easier because of this.
-If i was to do this i'd still make the tracks slightly long. otherwise it ruins the feel of it being long distances xD

Oh and on Notchs blog at the bottom - pistons possibly added in but after 1.5!

Thats exactly what i was thinking. The scale of it means the height is far too tall xD. - without the proper scale it might not look so good :S you may have to cut a bit of the middle/bottom bit ; P

Yup..pretty much spot on. I agree /re making the tracks slightly longer too

It wouldn't look right though, as it the bottom would be mostly below level height only showing only the top part unless that's what you want?
