Just logged into MP for the first time, seen some nice buildings . Before I start, can I just check that I'm allowed to build anywhere that hasn't been built on already, isn't claimed, and is outside the spawn area?

Doors can open and close, not windows. But yes, you're right about everything else. And all the time you have to make it strong enough to withstand monster invasions.
