OcUK Nvidia RTX series review thread

Jeebus but there's a lot of butt-hurt here. Me? I'm looking forward to the 2080 Ti giving me a 2.5x speed increase over my Titan XM.

You said that the average performance bump is 39% which you don't see as bad, but you can't see if that bump is good or bad without looking at the previous bump (though to be fair, I suspect Pascal had a larger than average increase though I've not looked at it) to actually compare that increase. That's why I compared the last 980Ti to the 1080Ti, to see the bump, even if you don't own a 980Ti or a 1080Ti or care how they performed. And the relative performance increase of the previous Ti release was 54 - 85% increase according to TPU.

Now if you're happy, and I suspect you are, with the performance of the 2080Ti that's great. But a 39% improvement over a previous Ti isn't great when you compare it to Pascals release. As an addition to this, TPU has the 2080Ti at 39% faster only at 4k, their range is 23-39% faster than the 1080Ti. And yes, you're right, DLSS will help but by how much we won't know until games use it and we have multiple benchmarks to look at.

Edit - jealous of your cards still :p

If we were comparing like for like technologies I might be interested in what previous generations offered. But we are talking about a 39% average increase @ 4k (which is the only resolution I am interested in since I only have a 4k screen) plus a bunch of new technology such as RTX and DLSS - where DLSS is looking like it will almost double that 39% performance gain in games which support it. I can understand why people who are interested in the "bang for buck" argument taking previous generation jumps into account but money was not a significant motivating factor in my purchasing decision. Had these cards been 2k each I still would have bought them. Even at 2k they are 33% cheaper than the Titan V and perform better from what we have seen to date.

But, I do appreciate that you are able to have a civil discussion :)

There is one positive I can see here. Lots of people grabbed cheaper knock off 1080tis from the hands of people who sold them for a 2080 haha. So in the end 1080p and 1440p gets a bit more accessible for a while anyway.

Thing is in the TI's case it's a massive price hike to increase the FPS from a number you won't even see, to a bigger number you won't even see. Anything over about 80fps and you can't tell the difference. So why upgrade?

But over the next 12 months we will see a number of games where the graphics processing becomes much more of an overhead (historically this has always happened) so in current games you might not see much of a difference but in games being released 6 months from now it is likely to mean the difference between > 60fps and < 60fps at 4k.

You don't buy new hardware (at least I don't) on the basis of how they will perform in games from the last 24 months - you buy hardware for the future experience of games not yet available (well I do - you might well have different reasons).

Game requirements have barely shifted for years, so I doubt it tbh. Game developers are certainly not going to target high end cards when 2% of gamers are buying them.

The issue is Nvidia will pay studios money to implement features in to their games which might well make the games more demanding or at least support the new technology.

For example I imagine Nvidia have paid Dice money to put RT in BF5.

It usually happens with a handful of games, then dies off when devs stop getting sponsored to do it. It also gets expensive for Nvidia to keep shelling out. Devs won't go out of their way to implement something a tiny minority will actually use.

I'd hold off on the DLSS claims just yet, though it is exciting! While you were discussing 4K (i missed that), you should still state it IMO, just makes things easier for us who skim read :p My biggest gripe is that they've made a new generation with new funky hardware, DLSS and RT, with no real backing. Now I know they are telling people to send them their code for DLSS, which is a good way to hit the ground running, but it still feels like they're asking consumers to pay for beta features. RT looks like they'll have limited performance going by the videos so as with most things, 'wait for 2nd gen" applies, but we're paying for features that 'may' be used and 'possibly' at a not great performance level whilst shifting the prices up significantly and changing the price brackets.

Again going back to Pascal, the 2080Ti would be the 1080 if you look at relative performance compared to the previous gen and it's priced far higher than 'Ti prices', and it's not like NVidia aren't already making buckets loads of money. I suppose they might be doing it so as to not price AMD out of the market and mess about with lower tier pascal prices, but it still seems overpriced.

In a ideal world nobody would buy them and they drop in price but as that will never happen, it is up to the each person what they do with their money and if they want to buy a 2080ti then good on them and really nobody business really apart from their partner, Greg just think how many pairs of shoes you wife could buy with the money :p.

So after reading all the reviews, is it safe to say these new cards are great but no point getting them now when there aren't any games that use Ray Tracing

Mate, we done a cruise in May and it was only an eight night one along the Norwegian Fjords but she still took 15 pairs of shoes lol.

Anyways, yer I work hard, am far from young and buy what I like (within reason) . It would be nice to have a thread where those who have an rtx card coming could post without being called names. It hurts my feelings :P

As a 1080ti owner, there's nothing here for me. I'll wait for the next gen.

just watched Pauls Hardware. Review, Taking the Baseline of the 1080ti

his words not mine,

45 percent more cost for 14 percent more performance

haha wow just incredible honestly dont know what to say.

If you move here you get that awesome landscape all year round :) (and pay 1500 quid for your 2080ti FE instead of 1100 because of the Nordic Tax). I am with you though - I have worked hard my whole life, if I see something I want to buy I buy it (within reason) and the chances of getting any thread on here about either a red or green card without the other side coming along and trying to **** in everyone cornflakes are about as likely as AMD releasing anything to compete with 2080Ti in the next 3 years ;)

If you want the card and you can afford it then get it. You don't need approval from anyone here or justify yourself. In fact 9/10 people bashing the ones getting these cards wish they could get one and probably would if they had that kind of disposable income. Others will not feel justified even though they can afford it but whatever, life is short. The only gripe I have is when people insist on justifying their buys on here in retaliation because it's a little cringy. Oh and Nvidia because I hate them as a company :)

Nice country but £10 a pint  Amazing views though and nice people

agreed,if you want something just buy it,i can afford I just don't see it as acceptable pricing vs the 10 series so I wont buy one.

I never stress over it bud and fair comment about hating nvidia and I felt the same when I saw the money go from my account :D

Cringe worthy is AMD owners :P

You think the beer prices are high - you should see the whisky lol. I am not in Norway - about 3 hours drive from Oslo though (mid Sweden) and I can't imagine anything which would persuade me to move back to the UK (not even 800 quid saving on 2x 2080Ti FEs). Now I just have to wait for them arrive, I didn't order mine until late on announcement day so I got October 8th delivery date instead of Sept. Still just got a new Xbox One X to replace the one lightning fried 6 weeks ago so at least I have something to play with until the RTX cards arrive :)
