Belt doesn't really help in this scenario. The belt is designed to keep your core tight which should prevent you from lifting with a horribly rounded back, but if your form flops the belt won't save you.
It doesn't, not at all. A belt can't reduce the stress on your disks if you're bending your back like that.But given that it would have been keeping his core tight in aiding the poorly formed lift, that absolutely has to count for something.
